Seal install?

Hi all,

My '76 F-150 4x4 one of the 9" rear seals went out...so it is leaking axle oil onto the drum brakes and down to the tire.

My question is: What is the proper way to "INSTALL" the new seal? I know how to take it all apart and remove the seal, but would like to know if there are any "special" needs to consider for the seal install.

I'm thinking just tap it in with a rubber hammer until it seats...Is that correct?

Thanks for you assitance!

Just the rubber mallet is all that is required to seat the oil seal.

Thanks! However, turns out that my 9" axle does not have the inner bearing seal version...it has the seal on the axle with the bearing. Found that out after removing the axle.

So...had to re-assemble because all the shops in city were already closed...and the truck was not in a location that it could be left until Monday (half in and half out of garage).

I'll have to buy a new bearing kit and have it pressed on. Total bummer!

Well...at least now I know.

Check to see if the vent tube on the axle housing is plugged up. If it is, the pressure build up inside the housing will push the lube out past the seal, even one that is good.

Speaking of 9" rear's...is it possible to add to much axle oil? I know it should be checked while on level ground and stop filling when some trickles out.

Thanks.

hehe.... When I installed my 9" it was on the ground and my friend filled it up full, when I got an underchasis lube the guy unscrew'd the plug and lube came dumping out.... And I had been driving it like that for 3 months, no leaks and no overflow? I thought it was odd but he flushed everything out and filled it back up, never had any problems... So it is possible to add to much, but I would think it would have an overflow hose on it....

That is funny...Racerdave!

I've always heard that the 9" rear is such a great axle...until you have to work on them. Not that working on one is hard...actually quite easy, but I'm talking about what kind of axle/housing is under the truck. My truck's rear housing is stock from the factory...yet I get ten different answers as to how the seals/bearings are installed. Or what kind of seals/bearings are installed. Shouldn't ALL 1976 F-150 4x4's that came with a 9" rear have the same darn setup? The seals/bearings and the 31 spline axle length, etc. If not, then that just makes me wonder what "FORD" was thinking...makes it just to darn hard to work on them. Unlike the FE engine's...there if you say, 76 F-150 4x4 with 390FE engine...you get what you need. Not a lot of un-answered questions.

Just a bit of "venting"...
