Smile Quick INFO

I am leaving to pick up the new truck in about an hour. It is an 04. What do I need to know about the computer re-flashes before I receive it? What exactly do I look for on the engine to see if it the latest engine? I am new and have been reading the board for a few days, so try not to flame me to bad.
Thanks in advance.

If it is an '04, with the revised '04 motor, no official flashes as of now (unless the flash is brand new). I've got a Nov build, original programming, and running just great.

Regarding identifying the newer motor, look for the "2004" sticker on the passenger side valve cover. There are many other clues, but that is the easiest.

Just picked it up. It was built 6/03. Do I have the latest engine changes? Should I get it re-flashed?

did you order this truck? why would it have a build date of june of 03.....esp if you bought it in January, just curious, or was this a walk on purchase? thanks...

just worried, I ordered one in late november for the sole purpose of getting an 04 engine, my truck should arrive a week from monday. and I will not accept delivery if it has an 03 engine, not after waiting this long...I could walk on a lot a buy an 04 by now...or at least i should be able to.

You have one of the later '03 engines. From what I understand: early '03: injector issues; later '03: redesigned injectors, some improved components, but same overall design. The '04 motors, starting production on Sep. 29, 03, have many design improvements.

Whether you should re-flash or not is hard to say. I'd say not unless you're experiencing problems. There has been varied results with the previous flashes (Oct. and Dec.). Oct. fixed a bunch of stability issues, but at the expense of power/economy/quiet. More than likely the dealer flashed it to the Dec. level prior to selling it anyway. I'd say drive it for now, then wait until the tentative Jan/Feb/Mar flash that is supposed to be much refined. Of course, if you do experience problems, get it into the dealer for review.

Presuming you took delivery on dealer inventory, and being of last years model (03 motor primarily), hope you got a bargain - you should have.

Good Luck!

If you email emtabmm from the forum here, and ask him to run your oasis on your VIN , You might find out if your truck has had the flash before you picked it up. My 04 with an 8/03 engine build has allready been flashed once before my dealer took delivery of it. Now it's had the Dec flash and is running great.

I to did my homework after the purchase, it took me a month from my first visit to the dealership to buy it. That whole month i never thought about looking up a forum on trucks, I asked around alittle and heard the rough idle had been taken care of for 2004, so i said why not, not realizing the different build dates (2004truck/2003engine) till a few days after purchase, but thats all water under the bridge now, i've had the truck a few weeks and all is well, runs great. The service advisor did an oasis search for me and went over it with me, told me the 03t02 flash (oct flash? i think?) was done at the dealership, and the 03e03 (dec flash? maybe?) recall hadnt been yet, said i can have done when i want. I'm sure my pilot injection has been disabled since it idles about as loud as my 7.3l, the power is awsome, no problems as of yet,, I wouldnt worry about the build dates, mine are about the same as yours. I dont worry, I just drive and cant get enuff of getting pushed back in the seat when i hit the pedal. Take care, Congrats on the new truck, John

wilba504, Does yours have the new turbo impeller or any other of the 04 mods? Is there a actual date on the engine?
Do you recomend taking it to the dealer and asking for the Oasis check? I havent drivin the powerstroke before, so I'm not real sure on the low power, there is a slight vibration in the pedal under certian conditions.

Hi Age,
If you look on the drivers side valve cover toward the firewall you will se the engine build sticker that tells the date and place of build. Mine is a 25 june 03 build at Indy. I think all the new Engine mods took place in September except for the new injectors which were done in the spring. So to have the newest engine design you would need a sept or later build date, Ive learned all this on this forum since i bought my truck.

I've read about a condition called turbo drone or turbo bracket drone on the site, happens beteween 1500 and 2000 rpm i believe, do a search for it, theres lots of info about it. I would do a search for your low power problems here also. If there has been a problem and a fix for the 6.0l there will be info on it here. What makes this such a great site is these guys document everything for the benefit of all 6.0l owners. Hope this helps, take care, John

24 June 03, Only a day apart. As far as idle goes, mine is not loud at all. Thanks for the help, I will keep searching. Just need to know the key words. I am learning.
Just as long as there isnt any MAJOR issues with this engine I will be happy.

Go to this thread, read completely…. and post. Follow, on page 3..MLF250’s format, it is good…and easy!
Important update to instructions on page 6, 17 posts down from the top of page.

ODOMETER reading at time of problem is critical.
In addition, please read more instructions, bottom of first page, posted by Tim L

The simpler the writing (posting) of “problem/odometer” reading………….the easier it will be to collate. Do not need many words. I must reduce all the date into a usable format; extra words will take more time to complete.
