I'm starting to wonder how easy (or hard) it might be to swap gear between trucks. If I found something with a 4x4 Ranger/Explorer with 4.10 gears who wanted to trade for my 3.73's for better economy, what would it take to swap gears? I'd like to put 4.10's in for more power for hauling/towing. I have 31" tires and the 3.73's show a little weakness pulling a trailer. Anyone ever swapped like this? On another, similar note, what about just pulling gears from a donor truck that was wrecked? What is it going to take to get them in my differentials? Thanks,
to swap just the gears is going to take someone with some knowledge. It is not just a pull and install. There are some critical tolerances that must be set up etc. Most have said around $300 to set up a rearend, granted that may have included parts. One guy told me that axle splines are a problem thus there may be a few more unknowns to contend with.
I was gonna put a different rear end in mine and bought a used one for $350 complete. Was gonna require new brakes etc, found that I had a higher ratio then I bought, took it back, now have $350 credit that I have to use.
I know the job would take some knowledge and quite a bit of work. My main question was whether or not it would be worth it (from a money-saving standpoint) to get used gears or swap with someone else. Probably better off just giving someone money to do it new/professionally. Thanks for the reply,
