Hi Guys!
After replacing the alterantor it seems that there is still something wrong ....when none of the accessories are on everything looks good the needle on the volto meter stays little over the middle of the gauge but right after i turn on a/c , lighths and fan to hi ...it drops to around 10 volts when the car idles.. it does not happen when im driving ..what could be the problem ,antoher bad alternator ? voltage regulator ? or is the way it has to be? cant remeber how it was before never paid any atention utill the alternator went bad...
Daaaaang... I was just about to post this SAME question. I'm going to have my battery tested tonight or tomorrow, to see if the alternator crapping out affected the battery. Where is the voltage regulator located?
The voltage regulator is an internal part of the alternator. So, if you have replaced your alternator, are you sure your replaced it with one of the proper output amperage/voltage rating for your van. If it is, then you might want to check your belt tension to be sure the engine is turning the alternator sufficiently during idle or check your idle speed to be sure it is correct. Also, check that you have a good, clean ground connection.
Voltage regulator is built into the alternator. At idle speeds, the alternator is not operating at its maximum output. This and a weakened battery will cause the flucuation you notice when a heavy electrical load is put on the system. When you are driving at road speeds the alternator output is sufficient to meet the electrical demand. Have your local auto parts store do a system check for you.
