2150 vacuum choke pull diaphram ?

My carb is rebuilt and works fine most of the time. Cold starts in the morning are the only problem. I pump the throttle once and crank her over and she starts right up. It runs good on fast idle for 5 to 6 seconds, then quits. I do this 4 times, then the truck will continue running after this. I think that the electric choke coil takes over by this time. Changing the coil setting doesn't seem to make it better. If I get someone else to crank her, what should I look for with choke function? If it is the vacuum choke pulloff, how do I set it? Maybe it should pull abit more?

2150 Choke Adjust

I have 2150 on 302. Mine started like yours. I think I have mine adjusted pretty good now; it starts and warms up with one start attempt. This is my method from what I have read and experienced:

Adjust Thermo-housing to index or rich setting depending on engine decal. With Engine Off and Cold; open throttle: choke flap closes tight (adjust thermohousing if not) and is on highest level of the cam. This is start position of engine.

Pull-in on Vacuum pull off diaphragm and choke flap should open up 1/8". Adjust screw on vacuum can to allow 1/8". Choke screw setting should be on 2nd step of cam. This is where engine will run initially. Adjust fast screw now to specs (1500-2000)

There is a hex head screw on the choke lever mechanism behind the thermo-hoiusing. I adjusted this so at hot run, when choke wide open that the fast idle screw no longer touches the cam or influences idle. Idle solely depends on the drivers side screw or the "dashpot".

All this assumes that someone didn't tamper with levers by bending or other damage. I had to keep fine tuning this choke setting until I was satisfied or maybe just gave up. A mirror and good lighting will help in the process and understanding of how the choke operates during the warm up process. Hope this helps.

Good tips, rainbowATF.

Check this page for more info on how the choke system works on Motorcraft 2150 carbs:

I did the adjustments and it couldn't get any better than this. It's about -10F here and the truck just started and ran on fast idle like a new one! Thanks again guys.

choke adjust

Glad to hear you got it adjusted. I had these same problems and after reading BubbaF250 site and a bunch of replies in the various forums, I thought it out and adjusted and adjusted until it worked. Just got the vacuum hot air stove reinstalled to my choke and have that working in addition to the electric choke.
