Is anyone else experiencing a very slight thump or bump when taking off from a complete stop i.e. stop sign, or light. I have checked all of what I would think would be the obvious items, seat bolts, u-joints. The truck only has 15,000 miles on it. This vehicle was involved in the transmission recall so I don't know if I should be worried. It only happens when I pull away from a complete stop, not a rolling one and nothing seems to be out of the ordinary when I step on the gas with my foot on the brakes. I even thought it might be gas sloshing around, but I don't think that's it, it does it regardless of how much is in the tank.
Any ideas, before I have to surrender it to the dealer.

My guess is that it is the slip yoke on the driveshaft.
YOU can lube it or have the dealership lube it or replace the driveshaft. BTW, there are no zerk fittings . You'll have to remove the boot. Make sure you have a replacment clamp handy. It doesn't look all that hard but you'll have to drop the driveshaft.
Mine was replaced by the dealership. I have the old one in the garage. There is noticable play but no evidence of the splines being damaged in anyway. Go figure...
My thoughts are the same, slip yoke could be bad, and I don't think lube will help it any. As a matter of fact it probably went bad because there wasn't enough lube to prevent wear. This is my experience from my Bronco anyway.
ColyM4...
Yes, I believe that you are correct. Lubing won't really help. I do wonder the year of the truck as my 2000 was updated with an updated(duh...) driveshaft.
I should also say that there seemed to be plenty of grease in mine when I disassembled it.

I hope that someone else (Ford) will foot the bill. My driveshaft replacement topped the $600 mark. (Covered under extended warranty)
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 10-Jul-02 AT 06:06 PM (EST)]I think it has something to do with the rear suspension. I am going to try a ladder bar or something similar. What final drive ratio do you have? I have 4.10's. Is yours standard transmission?
I had this happen on a 96 half ton 4x4 and the fix was an updated slip yoke made out of a harder and tougher steel. The harder I braked for a stop the more of a thump when pulling away.Apparently in my particular case the output shaft was leaving a "step" (for lack of a better term)in the slip yoke.I don't know if there is a similar type of fix for the SD.If there is we probably would have read it here by now.
Sorry, folks. My truck is a 2001 F-250 extended cab, 5.4L, Auto, w/4.10 gears, 8 foot box and camper package. Like I said it only has 15000 miles on it BUT the trans was changed. I can't remember if it did it when I had a load on the truck, but I'll find out next week when I load the camper again.
There doesn't seem to be a noise associated with this "bump", it just feels like the front two seat bolts are loose and when I take off I feel it through the seat and sometimes the steering wheel.

I have a 2001 SD-250 exteded cab V10 with 4000 miles on it and it does the same thing. I never had it looked at. It did it ever since I bought it. I'm not sure but I think its normal. I just got rid of a 99 gmc sierra and it did it too and I got it in writing from GM that it was normal. I don't want to go through that again!
Although this a CC driveshaft, the removal is the same.
Now some of you think that it is not the slip yoke. That's cool. But even though; this is a good Preventative Maintenance thing to do!Since Ford, in their infinite wisdom, decided not to let us actually grease our trucks. .

If it helps, please make sure you drop Stan a line and tell him so!
Hey dudes its the slip yoke!! My 99 and 2000 SD CC PSD did the same thing. The yoke was dry as a bone and would let the shaft cram up into it during a stop. When you accelerate it jerks back instead of sliding smoothly. Like Monsta says a zerk fitting on the yoke from the factory would have been nice especially on SD trucks that should have been a given from the factory. I guess the bean counters saved a few nickels on this one Anyway I had mine made at a local Diesel machine shop WITH A ZERK FITTING!!
Good Luck and change the yoke.
I had to do just what Stan described to a 2000 E450 bus. We were replacing a rear seal were the drive shaft goes into the rear differential. (around 45000 miles) Since the shaft was off I check for slop in the u-joints. found no slop but did have a little slop in the middle of the shaft. shoved a bunch of grease in it and put it back together.
(just a little side note, I'm sure Stan was corrected many times. The blue stuff is grease, its supposed to hold up to wet areas better. From what I have heard)
I have a '99 F350 and the drive shaft makes a clunk as well when I start out from a stop. Even when I am rolling at about 2 - 3 mph and I give it some acceleration, I get the clunk.
I was thinking about have the dealer look at it as well. But from what I can tell on FTE, the clunk is "normal".
