96 shift/transmission problem
shift/linkage problem. First noticable thing: no longer have to pull the shift lever back towards you in order to shift - it used to have a detent or something restricting shifting until the lever was pulled towards the driver seat. Next is the position indicator doesnt match the gear it's in - ex: when in reverse, the indicator is near the park position, neutral is near reverse, etc... Disconnect linkage from trans and by hand, can easily move shift lever by pushing/pulling linkage cable. Again with linkage disconnected (and engine off), transmission feels to
shift normal throughout the gears.
Wife cant pinpoint when or how the problem started, but 14 year old son feels it may have begun a few months back when wife apparently backed over some boulders.
I see 3 possible problems: (1) bent linkage, (2) something broken in the steering column or (3) bad transmission. Any suggestions?
