It's Cold Let's Think About Summer Vacations

What’s your best vacation story?

Here is mine. While I usually take an extended vacation every two or three years, my best vacation (by far) occurred in July - three years ago. Now you might question my co-pilots navigational ability since we headed south out of South Carolina and our goal was to visit Montana, but it was really part of a devious master plan to make the trip last a full month. Anyway, nuts or not, south through Georgia and into Florida we headed merrily on our way to Montana. Once into Florida, we followed the gulf coastline into Mississippi where we stopped briefly to gamble in Biloxi. Since we did not accumulate new fortunes at the tables, we continued east into Alabama, through Louisiana, and Texas into Mexico. We then headed north back into the states. We marveled at the Grand Canyon in Arizona. We drove around the monolithic rock formations in Monument Valley, visited Bryce Cannon, Castle Rock, rode the fairy boat across lake Mead, and drove across the salt flats in Utah. We gambled once again in Nevada then turned north to see the Lava fields in Idaho. We stayed northbound with a small jog into Washington and eventually ended up in Canada. By the way, the Banff area is beautiful and is well worth the drive by itself. From there, we headed south back into Idaho and then turned east into Montana. While in Montana we went gold panning, fishing, were fortunate enough to see a pair of Grizzly Bear Cubs fighting, and had snowball fights in Glacier Park. We particularly enjoyed the moose, deer, elk, buffalo, and other abundant wildlife and geysers of Yellowstone Park. Leaving the park, we drove over Bear Tooth pass back into Montana and headed east toward Mount Rushmore in South Dakota. We still had a few days left to the vacation, so we detoured southwest through Wyoming and into Colorado where we drove to the top of Pikes Peak. From there, we decided to head off to Roswell New Mexico to see if we could find any UFO’s or aliens. Although we saw plenty of aliens, I could not confirm that any of them arrived by UFO so we jumped back into the truck and headed back east through northern Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Tennessee, and North Carolina ending up back into South Carolina twenty states, 10,000+ miles, and 30 days later.

What a vacation!

Nice trip.

My wife and I had a great 1st anniversary trip this past October. Flew to Milan where we had a BMW R1150RT rented for two weeks. Rode up to the alps and over many many mountain passes into and around France. Checked out the French equivalent of the Grand Canyon. Went south over the Pyrenees into Spain. Rode all around northern and central Spain and then back to Milan. 3,800 miles in 13 days. 1 tire replaced in Spain. Incredible sights. Amazing ancient towns still lived in. Cheap good wine. Very very nice people (save for one rude couple in France). If anyone rides a bike, I would highly recommend touring around Europe. Plenty of rental outfits, and you don't need to spend alot of $$ on a tour company. Just get a good map and go.

We don't have kids.

Still have to check out some of the pretty sites stateside like Bryce Canyon and such. Big place, America.

Did you check out white sands while in New Mex? Close to Rosewell. Pretty surreal.

I want to take that trip!
For our anniversary this past summer, we went all the way to...Philadelphia. 3 1/2 hours. But we did some unusual things. I have a book called PA Oddities, it lists the weirder sights and places here. Our goal is to visit as many as we can. (Worlds lagest pothole? Seen it. Home of the cheesesteak? Ate there. World's tallest X-rated statue? Got the pictures.)

Really want to go back West, I'm insanely jealous, sigma. Whereabouts in SC are you from?
