I'm looking to store #2 diesel in 55gal drums at my home. They will be filled at the fuel station and I'm dumping in a 16oz bottle of Stanadyne in each drum.
How long will it keep and still be good fuel? The bungs will be tightened and kept in the cold in the winter. And cool in the summer.
Also make sure there is no water in the bottom of your barrels.
You can drop in a small chunk of dry ice. The evaporating dry ice (carbon dioxide) will displace the oxygen. Be sure the ice is complety evaporated before sealing, otherwise you will pressurize and possibly rupture the drum.
Try to store the fuel at a steady 60 degrees or so, a higher temp is worse than a colder temp.
There is a small power plant in the 4 Corners area that stores diesel fuel as a back up to coal, they turn the fuel over every 3 years.
I keep a 5 gal can of diesel in the barn over the winter. Use a gallon or so every now and again in my tractor. I put Sta-Bil in it.
I have used Sta-Bil for years in the gas engines in my collector cars. Gas goes rotten in a few months. Gunks up the fuel filters or just won't run. Sta-Bil keeps them running for 2+ years. It's good stuff.
I wrote Sta-Bil and asked them specifically if it was OK to use in diesel. They said A-OK.
