^ Don't twist. It's got splines cut in it and is just pressed on. A little heat on the stick should help it pull off easier.

The one complaint I have about Ford 5 speeds is the shifter ***** ALWAYS come off the shifter at the wrong time. I don't know how many times in various trucks I've shifted from 2nd to 3rd and *WHAM* I slam my fist into the dashboard

I finally solved the problem when I replaced the entire stock shifter assembly with a Hurst Bullet short throw shifter (with the really cool "T" handle).

I have in the past, however, drilled a small hole into the back of the stock shifter **** and tapped it with a set screw. That was a temporary solution that lasted 2 years.....

Wish I thought of that, I just super glued mine on, it started morphing into a blob. I should take a picture, it's crazy.

Has anyone else noticed this: My mazda tranny **** stays put, but the center insert with the gear shift pattern printed on it pops out with ease. It's so loose that it rattles, and I usually drive with it out of the shifter because it drives my nuts.

That happened all the time when I had my old F-250. It does get pretty annoying. If i was just cruising and it ws rattling, I would take it off.

I would like to know why ford uses a different **** on the 300 and the 302. The **** on my 300 would come off sometimes when I downshifted aggressively from 3rd to 2nd..cuz I'd actually pull down and up at the same time they way I was holding it.

I don't know how you'd get the **** to come off on a 2-3 upshift....somehow you're pulling up when u push forward...interesting.

Mine's the same as my dad's '96 with a 300, same as every other M5OD I've driven. Ford used a different stick (and **** too?) on the ZF tranny.

I've owned a 95 F-150 with a 300...my buddy has a 96 w/ a 300...and they had the hard plastic ball with the white letters for the gear indicator label if you want to call it. My 302 has a rubber shifter that just has the "gear indictor" molded into the rubber. I've seen other 302s with the same one so it's not an aftermarket ball the owner put on (I don't think).

They're all M5OD's...

I saw a piston shift **** at autozone's ricer department today (practically the whole store now)...wow....stupid ricers.
