What year ford and is it a truck? A 9 inch will have a removable third member and an 8.8 will have a rear cover kind of like the dana 44 cover.

This is in fact if the truck in question is a half ton.

If I remember right - the DANA's all have the number (60, 70, 44, etc..) stamped on top of the housing near the center hump.

The shape of the cover will also tell you what the others are. Usually the number of cover bolts is the reference.

Basically we just need a little info on the truck and a description of the axle. Then you should be able to get a positive ID.

It's almost certainly the ford 9". I don't think the 8.8" came out until later. If it doesn't have an inspection cover on the back held on by bolts, it's definately a 9".

I agree it's most likely a 9 inch that year. As for the gear ratio it could be anything, 2.80 to 3.70. I have found those ratios from one to the other in 300 6cyl. trucks.

8.8" or 9". 1983 was the year when both were being used, after that, the 8.8.

83 was the first year for the 8.8, but, the 8.8 and 9" were used side by side right up until 1986, the 8.8 is considerably more common in the later years however.
