Question Ford ranger v6 opt.

Howdy once again all!!

Once again kudos to everyone. Here is my question. I've got a line on a free running condition 98 4.0. I'm planning on putting it in the ol 58. Is this engine gonna push it enough so that I can tow a boat or a sand rail. I'm going to keep the stock 3.98 in the rear end. thanks again...jax

The 4.0 was designed for the Explorer-Ranger series trucks. They are alot lighter than your F-series. If it was just going into a street truck that never worked, I'd say ok. But if you're going to work it and tow, I would opt for a 302-351W setup.

Hi

I have a 4.2 liter in my 2003 pick up and have had several 4.0 liters. As long as you use some common sense and not try to pull a Mack truck I see no reason why it won't work. The gear ratio will be fine. A overdrive trans would be nice just lock it out of overdrive when you are pulling something. Just my thoughts.

I agree that it would be an acceptable engine for cruising if your not interested in performance, but I wouldn't think that the MPG would be as good as one might expect due to extra weight already mentioned. I have not checked the specs on the 4.0 but I would not be surprised to find that it has at least as good of HP as the stock V-8's from that era.

That being said, if I the engine wasn't free, I wouldn't consider a V-6. A 302 or 351 would be more acceptable and would certainly help if you ever wanted to re-sale the truck.
