X trannies

Hello All

Guess nobody liked my other post so I'll try a different question. Is the 4R100 in the 2k- 03 X better then it was in the late 90's as far as reliability? Or should I look at the newer 03/04 5Speed auto for the X ? My normal towing weight is ~9-10k #'s. Not too concerned about fuel economy but reliability in the middle of nowhere.

Thanks

The newest tranny the TorqueShift will not bolt up to the engine you have. Although nice to have a 5 speed the electronics are as well different.

In order to get into a "newer" tranny (4R100) as well the electronics are different. You might need a new ECM to control the engine and tranny.

Check with you loacl dealer on engine code (drivers side above door hinge) and what type of tranny to use.

Sorry about that I meant I'm going to buy a used excursion and was wondering which tranny is better for towing. I know the Torqueshift is a new tranny but supposedly I heard they put them in passenger transport vans along with the 6L for a few years before they put them in the 03 excursions/pickups. But if I get a 2k - 03 7.3L with the 4R100 arent those trannies a little better then they were in the 90's trucks ?
I'm getting rid of the expy and upgrading to the 16" longer excursion.

Thanks
Sam

Ford has made continual improvements to the 4R100.

An '03 4R100 will be better than a '99 4R100 because Ford replacement some of the more breakable parts with more durable pieces.

Look at the comparable pieces here:

Okay, There really is a toss up between the both. You can only get the 4R100 on the 7.3L and the TorqueShift 5R110 on the 6.0L.

The upside on 7.3L 4R100 is a long term following. Yes the 5R110 has been around for a couple of years but has not had the true test of time say 150K miles of customer driven stress. Down right the 5R110 is a better tranny in theory but time will tell.

The other downside is the 6.0L and the inherant problems they are having with the engine; Blown Turbo's, injector failures, rear main seals leaking to name a few issues.

7.3L 250hp @ 525 ft lbs
6.0L 325hp @ 625 ft lbs

The 6.0L numbers aren't shabby, but I like to put my money in a sure thing. A couple of modifications and your number on 7.3L is close to the numbers of the 6.0L.

jschira,

You are right, although in 99' the tranny was the E40D... Let me clarify. The 4R100 is a E40D.

Not for nothing, but I have burned my torque converter in my 4R100 already with 27K. I play hard on my truck.

Ford is replacing it under warrenty by me pleeding with them and making some friends at the local dealership.

What they are putting in is the converter for the 5R110 transmission.

Lower stall speed @ 1200rpm and capable of handling 450+hp.

Thanks for all the replies. Now I can keep an eye out for either since I've already modified my truck's 7.3 w/o many issues except a bloody knuckle(darn rusty turbo bolts).

Thanks Sam
