alright i really need a job. and ive been looking past the security guard idea cause it doesnt always pay much for the risk that could be involved.
but now i might consider it. im a pretty fast runner, i can throw a heck of a punch and tackle pretty good, IF the situation calls for it. outside of that im pretty sure alot of security jobs require you to just sit there and if something happens, call the police.
does anyone have any experience in this field?
also if i get to carry my H&K .45 ( i doubt it though ) ill be a happy man
I was a patrol supervisor for a security company in Columbus OH when I first left the military. I was a cake job. I HATED it. My guys had no discipline, no value in their appearance and you really have no authority.
You hit it pretty much on the head, you sit there and call the cops if anything goes down. My job had me post checking making sure my guys were awake and on post all night. Fortunately I never had to sit one of those posts I'd have gnawed my arm off or something.
If you can, see if you can get a patrol route. Typically many of these security companies contract with apt complexes and subvisions to do a specified number of drive throughs through the night. I had 10 complexes to slide thru four times per night. Just make sure folks aren't loitering, windows aren't broken etc. I saw some pretty neat stuff and I did it all in a police pkg Crown Vic with lights and all. At this particular company, only the supervisors and the Chief carried a firearm. I carried my own Beretta 92F. I took firearms training thru the state of Ohio and was certified to carry a pistol or a shotgun (a bit much when you'll go thru hell if you ever use it). It was an interesting 8 or 9 months. I may be able to answer any questions that you might have. Not much risk involved if you don't have a pistol though because they don't perceive you as being a threat.
Alex- thanks for all that info. tommorrow im going to check with the 2 security companies around here. i also applied at Gander Mountian for the sporting goods/ firearms department... since i could always use a discount on all that stuff
hey marine, what all do you have to do to get into a job like that (bein a security guard). im a senior in high school right now and id like to do that after i graduate while im goin to college and stuff. im goin to college to be in law enforcement, and somethin like that would be good experience and wouldnt look bad on my resume . thanks for any advise/tips you can share with me.
250, I hope this job works out for you, I know you've been looking from previous posts, and I hope you can land this job. What company would you be looking at, as I am also in the Twin Cities, and security gaurd doesn't look like that bad of a job.

NO! I do it the best! LOL! Anyways, where do you live again? Does it snow alot? If so you could buy a plow for next winter with all the money you make in the summer. That's what we do and we go out for a 10-15 hour run and make at least $2000 everytime. If you do, just make sure you get good properties not full of gravel and pot holes!

All you have to really go and do is apply. If you've got a clean background you're in. However in your case, I would suggest something a bit more structured like campus security at your local college/jr. college (not the one you're attending). Typically the dept is more structured.
Hey one more thing you'll run into lots of police officers while you're working security. If you carry yourself well and represent your company well the officers will respect you and you'll develop and build good relationships--you never know when you'll need them for references or just to back you up.
Agman,
If your from IL you will need to apply to a private security company and if you have a clean record they will hire you and put you through a 20 hr class in order to get your blue card from the Dep. of Professional Svs.
You have one year to get your blue card after you get hired. Then you will probably want to take the 40 hr course for further experience. Most securities will offer that course after 1 yr on the job. If you are working armed security, you'll need a FOID card from the IL State police and go through the state 40 hr gun course.
Some adviced get a job where you don't have to move around a lot. Like that you can sit down and do youre homework at the same time.
After I got out of the MARINES I worked in private security while going to college. It gave plenty of time to do my home work. Now I work in a police dept in the suburbs of Chicago.
Hope this help.
Let me know if you need more info.
I don't think you have the right attitude for the job but that never stopped anyone else from taking it and ending up in jail themselves. Hertz Rent A Cops are a nickname police gave uniformed security years ago.
Try something else that might pay better and be less of a risk to your health, safety and that will keep you out of JAIL
I was a Physical Security Guard in the Army was never so bored in my life. We watched the grass grow and an occasional wild animal on an electric fence. In the civilian world if you have a pistol permit there are better pay scales. I interviewed for a nuclear power plant job in 1984 the hourly rate was 12 per hr w/permit not bad back then but the sit and do little thing kept me from taking the job....
hey thanks alot Alex and Roger! It may sound dumb to yall but im really excited about gettin into law enforcement. id like to do as much as i can (college work, training, sec. guard work...) before i try to become an actual police officer, i hope it will give me more opportunities or atleast make me stand out. plus it will give me alot of experience i think. man i cant wait til im out of high school
hey Roger, it sounds like you know alot about this stuff plus you seem to know how to get started in IL. Do you mind if i drop you an email or two? ive got a couple questions. FTE wont let me see your email address cuz i have less than 25posts

i put in 2 applications for security places. one of them im supposed to return to at 845 tommorrow morning. ( thursday )
id prefer to get the job at this place, just from the appearance of the place it seems like a better establisment than the first one. plus its closer to home.
