Damage done?

Might be a dumb question but here goes:

My dad wanted me to change oil on his jaguar s-type ( that came out of the blue). Reason being is he is noticing some problems (knew it was coming..)...

What i am asking is, do you think the engine had some damage done to it by doing Castrol GTX every 10,000 miles (dealer, no charge of course ). Also, if it helps, the first one was done at yes, 10,000 hard break-in miles.

Well, what kind of problems, and what kind of motor? Rod knock, low oil pressure, what?

It amazes me that the people who spend the most on their cars are the ones that try to be stingy on oil and extend their drain intervals. Castrol GTX is a good oil, but I have my doubts about 10,000 mile drain intervals with it.

We need more information!

OK, heres some more information. Thought i'd see for myself what in the hell is actually going on instead of getting the words from his mouth.

BTW, this car is leased. I know thats no excuse for not taking care of the beast but its one that my dad used in all of the 10 cars hes ever leased. (He's gonna get it one of these days...)

Anyway, He's got the S-type 4.0 DOHC V8 with 280 horse/287 torque. From what he told me, its a constant "ticking" sound..and it is. It's there from idle and all the way through the gears and to the redline. Almost sounds if theres a bucket full of sludge in there (probably is). Another thing, not sure if problem or not, but when it idles, the car seems to shake every 3 or 4 seconds. Literally, it is a "shake", not too big and not to small. (This just started happening when the ticking did). When this happens , the rpm's move up to about 1300 rpm and back down again. Weird.

Car has 24,000 miles on it. I am off to autozone to get the mobil 1 oil and filter. Hopefully they have this part #.

Sounds like the oil broke down and sludged up a lifter. You might try some MMO or another of that kind of solvent in the oil to see if you can free up the lifter. I'd suggest 1/2 quart of MMO in place of that amount of oil in the next change.

Don't know when the next change will be. Possibly never. Even if i would try to do it, my dad would probably say the famous bull**** line again "Its not our car" ,LMAO. That used to make me SO mad.

Anyhow, I changed it 2 hours ago and filled with mobil 1 5w-30 and put the mobilone filter on. I made sure everything was tight and started it up and the exhaust roared That "ticking" crap didn't stop totally, but at least now you can barely hear it. The idle/shaking/revving thingy is still there though. Who knows, it may fade once that mobil 1 breaks in

Doesnt that just burn you? I'd have just let him blow it up. That way he'd get the idea.

Sounds like the fresh oil did the trick. Watch the oil (if possible) and when it turns black, change it again. Repeat as often as necessary. I'd still suggest the MMO on subsequent changes. You might even combine that with 10w30 diesel grade to help clean it even better.

The part that sucks is that it'll go back at 36,000 (or whenever the lease is up) and some unsuspecting sucker will buy it.

I can only think of three ideas about the idle speed. The first is that it's normal. The second is that the IAC is screwed up and needs to be cleaned. Dont ask me how because I do not know. The third is that the plugged up lifter caused it by modifying the valve lift and duration on one (or more, depending on how many lifters were plugged) valve. This would make it idle rough and shake as you described.

Good luck!

Yes i feel bad for the people who get these cars afterwards...only way i could get my mom to have the oil changed was to either A. Do it for her or B. buy her a gift certificate for pep boys for her b-day

The idle thing isn't too bad now that the hissing/ticking is gone. He's getting out of the habit of leaving it running anyway. At $1.75 / gallon here its a little too much money to waste premium unleaded like that

I also got a new air filter as apparently the scumbags didnt replace it at the last interval

We will see how it goes...Also, i couldnt find anything in the manual about the IAC and that breather filter thing (forget the name) so im not going to worry about that right now. I believe ive done enough work for a while....that Mobil 1 should be good for 10,000 miles , right?

Nice picture. Too bad it doesnt tell me anything other than you spilled some of that M1 when you were filling it.

Glad to hear it's working better now. I still say I would've just let 'em blow it up. If it's bad enough for them to complain about it, it's bad enough for them to get it fixed themselves. I suspect they were fishing for someone to do it for them.

Edit: "Dang thing. I'm gettin' me a chevy!" I can hear it now. You dont think I've ever been in this situation do you?

lol, i did spill some of it down the sides....got to be more careful. Couldnt use a funnel because they were all dirty and i didnt want the filter to get any more clogged than it would as soon as i started the engine.

I can understand why you were thinking that, as i have thought it in the past .. "ah, just let it blow up on them", Well, it never did. One car was a oldsmobile aurora and he racked 55,000 miles on it and never had the oil changed once!!!! That thing mustve been invincible.

Also, i noticed when its warmed it seems to have a deeper growl, or "snarl" should i say when you stomp the pedal.

Anyway thanks for the help rusty

lol, i did spill some of it down the sides....happens all the time in the explorer. got to be more careful. Couldnt use a funnel because they were all dirty and i didnt want the filter to get any more clogged than it would be as soon as i started the engine and all the current dirt gets caught.

I can understand why you were thinking that way, as i have thought it in the past .. "ah, just let it blow up on them", Well, it never did. Id probably regret it if i did on this car as i knew i couldve done something about it. One car he had was a oldsmobile aurora and he racked 55,000 miles on without a single oil change!!! All he did was top it off every month! That thing mustve been invincible.

Also, i noticed when its warmed it seems to have a deeper growl, or "snarl" should i say when you stomp the pedal.
