I have a f-150 351 windsor 5.8l how would i go about replacing this on my truck, is it one or two peace seal, its leaking really bad about 2 liters a day, also how to replace the front seal too, please and thank you for all the replies to this
It is a one piece seal. You'll have to drain the tranny fluid, pull the transmission to get at it. A little advise from someone who done it the hard way, get a buddy to help you removing and installing the tranny. I rented a transmission jack over the weekend and did it myself, never again without a helper. If you can, raise your vehicle as high as you can. If I were you, I'd get a Haynes manual to help guide you through the process, that's what I did anyways. The Haynes manual has a pretty good step by step process.
It's a pretty simple process really, just disconnect everything between the motor and tranny, kick down rod, shifting linkage, tranny cooler lines. Remove the starter. The cross member on the frame was a pain in the rear for me, but I got it eventually, I think that had to do with having a crummy selection of tools. You'll need a torque wrench for your flexplate unless your really good at tightening by feel. Make sure you have your torque converter bolts pulled through the torque converter before you tighten down the tranny bellhousing to the motor. I messed up on this and ruined my flexplate.
I'm sure some of the others will add some more helpful hints for you
Me and a couple guys were seperating a chevy 350 and a great little auto tansmission in a Nova years ago. Left tranny in place unbolted everything and scooched the motor forward and out with a lift...put in a new engine...and it vibrated worse than anything i ever felt...your voice shook and had to yell at 50 mph. thereafter. Peope said somehow the flywheel or torque converter was bent in the process. We were careful...working inch at a time. Support so nothing sagged...I dunno what happened. Just be careful and good luck.
I think but don't quote that the 302's after M were 2 piece rear seals...I'm just wondering if its possible that a 2 piece replacement is made for that, whereby you could cut and pull it out and fit the 2 piece around it to replace. probably highly unlikely but it'd be nice. Save an unnecessary tranny removal.
Front seal is merely the round pressed in seal in the front timing cover, again i believe.
