I am looking into a new camshaft for my 390. Right now I have the crane truck power cam installed. I am running Edelbrock heads, RPM intake, Saturday night special, MSD...pretty much the works. In addition, everything has been square decked, balanced, etc.
I want more power! What cam would you put in for more power?
That is an important question Putt. It does have a big impact. I have a little over 10:1. I talked with their "cam wizard" and he said it would be the best choice for me. I am thinking about having them make it a single pattern though as the exhaust lobe is a tad less aggressive than the intake. I'll see how they feel before I buy it.
I have never really checked the CR. I know the square decking and Edel heads have raised it from stock. I also know it runs better on 92/93 octane, so I am ASSUMING that it is at or over 9:1.
BTW, only about 80-90% of this trucks time is spent playing. I do need a cam that will keep the truck reasonably driveable/reliable.
I understand the Edel heads are only limited buy the valve springs that come with them. In my case, I'm running Crane springs that match my cam, at .607" exhaust lift.
So, I think the only concerns are using the right valve springs and
checking for piston to valve clearance.
I could be mistaken once again, but that's how I understood it.
My cam is .686 lift on both intake and exhaust. Edelbock heads. Had the springs, etc, set up by Keith Craft. The fact is the heads will take any lift you want to throw at them, it is the spring/valve setup that determines where it chokes. Most people agree that it is best to buy bare Ebocks and have the springs matched to your cam.
Unfortunately, I bought the complete heads, then decided to swap to Crane matching components for my cam. So, I have a complete set of unused valve springs, clips and retainers that came with Edelbrock heads.
Now, the guy working on my truck , says it's chattering at 5000RPM and that he suspects the springs are inadequate. These are the ones Crane suggested, although now I look at their web-site and see a lot of springs under the same part number. Apparently, they offer springs under the same part number, but one spring rate for Hyd/Mech and one for Roller. My cam is a Hydraulic roller, what does that mean?
He's tuned the BG carb, and it has only shown mild improvements in power. I think one run showed 271 RWHP. He did say that mine was already putting down more torque (360ish) than his Ford truck running a 514 CI 460 stroker motor with fuel injection (C6 and a 4x4 transfer case, Dana 60 rear). Apparently there is substantial loss in these old truck drive-trains.
