You can also look into getting dustless brake pads. I do NOT have them myself ... never have. But, I'm thinking about them for my truck that I'll get in about 8 weeks. I heard that the Ford brakes can really kick out the brake dust. And I've had about enough of that on my current Maxima.
I read in another forum post somewhere that PBR were recommended. I don't know exactly where to buy them, but check your local auto parts stores.
I have to disagree with Dr. No......I have 5200 miles on my F-150.....and the brake dust problem on the FRONT wheels is NO better than when the truck had a few miles on it!?!?
Interestingly enough, I have VERY LITTLE brake dust on the rear wheels....which makes me wonder if the standard EBD (Electronic Braking Distribution) System is working correctly....and just how much braking is being done by the REAR wheels vs. the FRONT wheels
Anybody have some additional thoughts on this issue?
FANMAN I was wandering the same thing. I took my truck out on the road wound it up and jammed the brakes on to see if the front seemed to pull hard or what not. Well it stopped nice, straight, and didnt have excessive nose down so I think they are pretty good as far as adjustment go. I am thinking its just the pads ford used and maybe the cold wet conditions we are getting here now. If it dont improve when I get new wheels I am gonna change out the pads with some of those dustless ones.
I keep seeing a lot of the new expy,s with brake dust on then also and almost every new 04 150 has brake dust on it, I am going to the dealer today to get my wifes SD back I'll ask them what's up.
The brake dust will not go away. The wife has a 03 Expedition with the same dust issue. 14000 Miles and still dust. I was hoping they fixed it for the 04's but they did not.
I have complained several times about the EXCESSIVE brake dust problem on the FRONT wheels of my new F-150.....and they told me that I am the ONLY new F-150 owner that has complained about the "problem". I find that hard to believe, but that is what they told me.
During my oil change, lube and filter visit on Wednesday, January 7th.....I finally convinced my buddy and Warranty Service Manager to go into Ford's "oasis" and see if there were any TSB's regardfing this "problem".....but there were none....
I believe that it if EACH AND EVERYONE OF US starts complaining to our dealers.....LOUD and OFTEN.....about this brake dust problem.....Ford will have no choice but to do something about it.....and hopefully SOON!!!!!
Not to be a wise guy but if you wash your truck once a week you won't see any brake dust. I was reading this post & looking at my wheels thinking to myself that I have never seen any brake dust. Then it dawned on me, I wash my truck at least once a week.
Since Ford aluminum wheels are clear-coated, you should wax the wheels whenever you wax the truck. It won't reduce the dust, but it will make it a lot easier to remove whenever you wash the truck.
As for the EBD, it only kicks in when you have weight in the box. If you've been riding around with the box empty, then your back brakes are barely working, and that's the way it should be. As you add weight to the box (or a trailer), then the EBD will increase the braking effort in the rear.
Well the service guys told me that this a big problem and ford is working on a fix but not till the 05 rolls out. Wash a truck why its a truck not a sports car or a family car its a TRUCK and made to get dirty and nasty...just my .2cents..
