Pulling

I have a 2000 v10 exc, I just purchased a 26 foot enclosed car trailer and was towing it home sat and it would not tow in OD and I only got 5 mpg towing at 70mph is this normal? I have towed with it and my open trailer and It was fine,

Does andy body know if there is a air deflector made to go on the luggage rack? something to get the air over the trailer?

Has any body tryed the banks exhaust? the complete system Is it worth the $$$

How much did it weigh?

How much higher than the truck is it? I do not know of any air deflectors off-hand but I'm sure they are out there!

Was your parking brake on?

Trailer ways 5100 lb empty and is about 2 feet taller than my truck, It really seemed to have alot of wind drag. I also plan on having about 4,000 more lbs in it with car and load.

So your pulling 9100 lbs @ 5mpg.... Doesn't seem that far off. The wind reflector might gain you about 8-9mpg maybe

What changes have you made to your X?

Exhaust?
Intake?
CHip?
etc...etc...etc.....

No way, something is wrong. I tow a 32ft travel trailer with my 2001 V10 EX and get ~10 mpg. Now, mind you, this is not going 70 mph, but about 65 or so. I don't think this makes a difference. I keep my OD on unless I am going through hilly terain, then I will switch it off when the trans starts to wander.

I have a Banks Stinger system installed, and I did notice a big dfference in power when towing, but not much mpg increase.

With my 01/v10 mine weighted in at 9800 and it was 7.1 at 70 mph. You are not that far off.

5mph can and will make a differance. head wind I went down to 5.2 it sucked

buy a programer for it and rase the MPG by 1.8 to 2.8. They work

10 mpg towing! I, most of the time, don't even get that empty

Anyway. I too have a 2000 v10. I pulled a 30', 12,200lbs Weekend Warrior for 2000 miles. First off, I wounld never do it again because the trailer sway way none too pleasant. But Tim is correct. Different conditions can make a HUGE difference with the gasser. When it comes to fuel economy, head winds are nearly as bad, if not worse, that steep grades. Steep grades are bad too. I had to run up a few hills maxed out in second gear. Talk about feeling like you're going nowhere fast.

All of the persuaded me to purchase a nice new 6.0L F350.

Guess I should have mentioned that on that trip I got no better than 6 mpg on any tank and usually it was closer to 5 mpg.

When using a tuner dont you have to run premimum fuel and if so is it worth the extra $$, what is a band stinger system, is it the complete exhaust, I want to do that but how mutch $$, I priced a used diesel yesterday, but I have to live with a trailer behind to jusfy the price and then maitnance and repaires go through the roof once out of warranty. I like my gas motor just was hoping not to dorp off the mileage so bad.

Chips for gasser definitely need premium fuel. From what I understand, all the chip really does is changes the computer to accept premium fuel. So most, if not all, the gain you are getting is from taking advantage of 92 octane. Could be a little more to it than that, but that is what I was told basically happens when you chip a gasser.

I price the full Banks Powerpack system (headers, ottomind, muffler, ect.). It was right around $2000.00 just for the parts. Installation can be done yourself if you're into that kind of thing. Supposedly it takes a "normal" person a couple of days to do it. If not, I was quoted 12 hrs shop time. I think shop rates are like $70/hr. Even at $50/hr., its another $600. Then I don't think that the Transcommand comes with it, so there is another $300. So it was right around $3000 for it all. Seemed a lot steep to me for the mere 56 HP and +67 lbs of torque. Even with all of that, you are nowhere near close to what a diesel can pull.

The Banks Stinger system, which is basically in intake and a Cat back exhaust was around $1000 with the Ottomind. Then, as well, a $300 Transcommand. Total of $1300.00. Still seem steep to me.

The lack of power and the short wheel base of the Ex is why I went to getting a diesel. Well that is how I justified it anyway. I wanted a diesel every since the 6.0 came out. Still love the EX though. It is good for a lot of other things, just not heavy towing in my opinion.

<<the mere 56 HP and +67 lbs of torque.>>

Considering my 1971 Mini had a whopping 39 hp TOTAL, I'd say a 56 hp increase would be welcome! My inbound from the UK 1967 is hot-rodded and has around 90 hp.

The problem with the X vs. my vintage Minis and Land Rovers is that it never breaks, so I don't get to post much, and I love this forum. People think I'm schitzo owning one of the largest vehicles on the road (X) and one of the smallest (Mini). I say it balances out the garage! The Landys are caught in the middle.

I did change out the mirrors on my X with a friend's F250 last week. Though I liked the large towing mirrors it came with, the smaller ones are far more user friendly for our garage, plus I never tow. Took 6 inches off the width of the truck.

Cheers!

Well.......

310 to 366 HP = 18% gain
39 to 95 HP = 144% gain

I'd take a 144% gain as well. That would put the Ex at 755 HP. That would be worth $2000.00!!
