Question Unhappy shift linkage

The linkage in my T-18 seems pretty stiff to me, and hard to down shift sometimes, especially from 3rd down to 2nd. i always double clutch it, that makes things go a little smoother, but it just seems stiff. i know all the linkage is internal, and it is sorta bathed in the transmission oil. what can i do to make it shift smoother and easier? my dad insisted in using 100 weight gear oil when we dropped the tranny and replaced the clutch. i decided to go with old age and treachery on this one. could the heavy gear oil be part of the problem?

It shouldn't when it is warm.
I would suspect that the syncro rings are worn out. It is about 25 years old now.
You can also make sure that the clutch is releasing completely when pushed.

Now that you mention it, it happens when it is cold. I don't back out the driveway till the water temp reaches 140 degrees. I let it spin the input shaftn in neutral for a little bit, to get the gear oil moving. I guess the gears need to spin and splash the oil around. How would i go about checking and repalcing the synchro rings? is it something i could do myself? or do i need to take it to a shop? Thank You

try a synthetic gear oil like amsoil i live in minnesota and we see below zero quite often the best thing I've done for winter drivability is put synthetic gear oil in my tranny ,diffs and tranfercase smoothed cold shifting and reduced rolling resistance to just about zero. if you still think you need syncro's get a good manual and follow it if you know your way around a wrench and are systematic you can rebuild it yourself

One thing that wears out is the shift mechanism on top of the tranny. A good cleaning, deburring, and minor parts replacement can help with vague gate patterns.

Thanks, I'll try the synthetic gear oil. What weight gear oil do you use? I live in Maryland, and it can get pretty cold here, it is 17 F right now. I'm going to search for some manuals too.
Thanks again
