I just got a 2000 Expedition with the 4.6L. I had a 2000 Mustang for a short time with the same motor. I noticed that the HP was down by 45 ponies. Obviously some differences are there that aren't advertised. Can anyone tell me what?
Also, the Expedition has 73k on it right now. What should I be zeroing in on right now in regards to maintenance?
Thanks for the help. Kinda new on these new fangeled motors. Got an FE that I am very familiar with but not so on the modular V8's.
I don't know what the main differences b/w the two 4.6's are, but would assume it's mainly in the timing, heads, and throttle body.
If you don't know the maintenance history, I'd say replace the fuel filter, oil, trans fluid, antifreeze/coolant, clean the MAF sensor, possibly the transfer case and differential fluids (if 4x4)etc. Get ready for plugs and O2 sensors as well.
I don't know about the ford mustangs but was the Mustang a EFI model, was it made for higher grade gas. What was the mustangs compression vs the expedition. Injector size, throttle body size, size design of the pistons / cylinders, and what diffrences between the ECUs.
I think that all needs to be looked at to see why the same engine has less power.
The computer tuning can cause the power difference. I would be willing to bet that the stangs are tuned more for sportiness. As for maintinence, change the tranny fluid, coolant, oil, and lube the chassis. I would rotate the tires, inspect them, and check pressure in them, and the spare. You should also change the transfer case fluid, differential fluid, and inspect your brakes. Plugs are just about due as well. There is an article on FTE that explains how to do them on the 4.6/5.4, they can be a bit of a treat. It also wouldn't hurt to clean all the windows, inside and out if the dealer hasn't done so already.
