I don't know the proper terminology for one of these tools but they are the magnetic stands with the attached flexible arm; use them for holding a plunger dial etc... Mine has the "On/Off" switch as most probably do. Mine no longer has any magnetic "powers" left and cannot reliably hold itself to metal any more. Does anyone know a way to bring back the magnetic abilities of this thing before I go drop a bunch of coin on another? Thanks for any help!
Is the contact area all dinged up ? if it is that could cause low hold ability, is it the push button starret type or the turn switch ?
I cant say I've ever seen one lose its mag properties, I have a 50 year old starret at working holding one of my gaurds on the machine, along with many cheap jap ones, we really chew these things up.
Dropping it may cause it to lose itas mag and I doubt its restorable without a magnet making machine
You can buy an imported mag base with a 1" travel .001 inc. indicator from travers, enco, msc for $20
If you have one that works, do not take it apart. I found this on a machinest web site. I forgot the theory behind this, but when you put it back together, it will no longer hold.
Thanks for the input. Mine is not a Starret, it is the switch that you turn side to side. The bottom, contact area, isn't dinged up and the piece is in overall good condition. I cannot figure it out. I may just have to give up and spring for a new one.
The switch isn't loose and it FEELS like it is turning something in that I can feel some resistance when I turn it. I do get some magnetic capabilities when I turn it on but nothing near what it should be, it cannot hold itself to anything on a vertical plane. Thanks for the help.
the entire magent turns in there, you can take some apart not the cheap jap ones the, the cheap ones we get are "kanetecs" and i think there $25 with the indicator, an ocassional user doesnt need an expensive starrett, even some of the tool and die guys wont buy a $100 dollar mag base
I have alot of starrett but i didnt buy anmy of it new, verniers i have are 2 mitutoyo digi 8' and a B&S 6'' dial, alot of indicators mainly old federals, in my area there is a ton of old surplus machine shop equipment and prices are cheap
