Looking to purchase and install headliner in my 56. Really would like to go with the original panel board, however I've heard it is very difficult to install (subject to breaking). I have seen the ABS advertised but not real sure what the material of construction is (plastic?). Not sure of the new vinyl liners either. Would sincerely
appreciate any tips, suggestions, or infinite words of wisdom, before I spend my hard earned money. Thanks.
fenders, Daryl, and myself all have the Rod Doors plastic version. It will not break like the wood, but it is a chore to put in. It is precut and requires no trimming. Premeasuring to locate the center over the front and rear window is critical. The material can be uphostered, painted or left black. fenders even did an article on the installation. Good luck, John
I've installed two of the orignal style headliners from denis carpenter. One in a big window 56 and the other in a small window 56. Both went in with no damage, but the small window did take some extra care. I replaced the rubber that holds the headliner in, this new rubber is more flexible. Also do the install on a warm day. (I did the small window in January in a garage with limited heat,)
I think the stock style headliner is a clean look.Just my 2 cents
I have installed two of the dennis carpenter stock head liners. One in a bigwindow and the other in a 56 small window. Both went in with no damage. The small window did take a little extra care. Be sure to replace the rubber that holds the headliner up. Also do the install on a warm day this makes the rubber more flexible. (I did the small window in January in a barely heated garage.) I'm sure it would have been easier in warmer weather.
I think the stock headliner is a clean look. Just my 2 cents!

I think the stock liner looks decent too Kevin. If you are not covering it I would go stock. You would be darn lucky to get a gapless install on an ABS liner.
But nevermind trying to cover a stock liner with fabric. Not a rookie project. This rookie tried. The rod doors lid is the ticket if you want fabric. The tiny gap you will likely get somewhere will be covered by the fabric.
Thanks to all I really appreciate the responses! I have to start being more critical of my purchases. My wife recently reviewed some of my receipts and questioned "why I purchased this or that item twice". I had to explain how "I broke the first one" or how "I installed it and then changed my mine" I figure this way, if something doesn't work, I have some back up here and we can all "share the blame" Ha!! Thanks again.
