84 460 emissions question...

i dont know if this would work better in this section, but here goes....

i have a stock 460 in an 84 F-250 and it has a sort of smog pump, i've been told that its a pump to help reburn exhaust to help fuel economy, currently it has no catalaytic converter, just straight pipe running from the manifold to the muffler, but i was wondering:

1.) What is this pump, and what does it do?
2.) the truck is registered in a county were there are no emmission standards, so i was wondering how you would go about removing it, and
3.) i was thinking of putting a good set of headers, dual 2.5" exhaust and Flowmaster mufflers on it for more torque and power, how significantly would just removing the pump increase horsepower? (forgetting about the mileage loss of course)

any info would be appreciated, thanks a lot!

My 86 came with dual air pumps, but, was non-catyalyst, so, all the air pumps did was add more air to the exhaust stream. This would lower emissions by increasing volume in the exhaust stream.
Just removing the pump will make little or no difference in power or economy. With something this big, that pump isn't any kind of load on the engine.
Get some good headers, remove the pump and save it just in case you might have to pass emissions someday, and don't worry about it.

The smog pump functions by pumping fresh air into the exhasut manifold where it causes the exhaust gases to continue burning to reduce emissions. With the amount of torque a 460 makes you won't even notice any effect by removing this pump. If you want to try it just remove the belt for a while and see if you notice any performance or mileage increases. I didn't.

However, I recently completed adding a set of Thorley headers with a single 2.5" exhaust to a DynoMax muffler. Nice improvement in power and throttle response but not mileage.
