I have a '92 f-150 w/ a 5.0 v8, auto transimission, 135k miles. For a couple of months now, my car has not been shifting into park all that well, so it has not really been starting that great. It looks like it is in park, but it is not. Sometimes, if I put my foot on the ground and roll the car Fred Flinstone style while simultaneously pushing the shifter handle up, it will "click" in to park, but that has stopped working too, so now I am having to jump the starter relay with a screwdriver to start it. Can anyone tell me how to fix this problem?
Depending on the specific transmission installed in your F-150, it sounds as if your transmission range sensor (E4OD) or park/neutral position switch (C6) needs adjustment or replacement.
The adjustment requires a special tool specific to each type of transmission (wouldn't you know it!) and is done under the vehicle where the mechanical linkage from the shifter connects to the transmission.
I'd recommend you get a manual that covers your specific transmission/year. This will help locate the correct special tool and describe the adjustment.
