I have a 1988 F-150 with a 5.0 in it. I was wondering if anyone else had ever had lifter noise with one of these. I bought mine with what sounds like lifter noise in the engine. I thought mabey it was a rocker arm but I replaced any that looked really bad and it still makes it. anyone have any ideas what it might be. The motor still has good power.
My 89 Ford Lariat 5.0 litre began making lifter(?) noises in the spring of 2002 (I purchased it the winter before). At least I though they were lifter noises.
But they got so bad that I had 1 mechanic who listened to it tell me that the main bearings in the engine were going and I should 'get rid' of the truck before the motor dropped out of it.
I'm on disability, and a new truck wasn't in my financial future, so I continued to drive it, babying it up hills or under load, which was when this horrendous clattering was the loudest.
On a completely unrelated matter I visited another mechanic. As I was leaving he asked if my engine always clattered like it was doing while idling in his parking lot.
I explained that it did, and had almost since I purchased the truck and that it got worse under load. He suggested that I try running Chevron premium (highest octane they have in Canada), which I have been using ever since.
I've never even heard a 'tick' out of the engine since I started using the Chevron premium.
Sure, it costs more to fill up. But the gas mileage is much better and overall it costs about the same to run.
my truck has some lifter noise, just some clicking while running... I never considered it to be to serious. It seems like a pretty common problem. worn lifters have a tendancy to stick.
Sounds like lifet noise is just a common problem with the 5.0. I think I will just keep driveing it then. Thanks for all the posts. I did put some Sea Foam inthe oil Guess I will see if that helps it a little. Mabey one of these days I will break down and put some new lifters in. Mabey i will try running some higher octane fuel in it and see what happens too. Can't hurt anything.
Oh yeah, what transmissions do you guys have in your trucks. Mine has a 5 speed in it. Also have you guys seen any other 88 f-150's with dual shocks on the front. The one I bought has this just wondered if it was normal or an odity.
I agree with the octane. My 91 4x4 5.0 150 convinced me it was coming apart. 87 or 89 it was the same. My mechanic buddy said to leave the generic gas behind and use name brand high octane and see. I did, ran 91 & 92 for a month. Now 89 octane from a very clean well kept not franchised gas station works great. It seems private owned stations dont care for the quality of gas as well as corp. stations. I didnt believe it till I saw it.
