OK, I helped a buddy install a 460 into his 77 over the last couple of days and now that it's in there, we can't get it to stay running. The ignition switch doesn't work to start the truck, but works to shut it off so he installed a push button starter on it.
This setup worked perfectly with the old 351M in there but doesn't work correctly with the 460.
Here's what we get when trying to start the truck; It turns over and fires when the starter button is pushed, as soon as the button is released the engine quits "running". I say it like this because it only "runs" with the start button pushed. What could the problem be? Thanks.
The coil gets 12V on start circuit ,once the engine is running the coil receives about 8 volts.
Try putting a test light on the wire that goes to the + terminal of the coil.
Look for power there when you Turn the key to the Run postion.
The again when you start it.
Yep, it sounds as if either the ignition module has failed on the run side or your ignition switch is a gonner.
They are fairly easy to replace and are available at any parts house.
You might check the plug on the back of the ignition switch, it could be loose or have a bad connection.
