hey guys. my friend has a 1991 f-150 with a 5.8 in it. he has been complaining of poor fuel mileage lately. he brought it over and we ran some checks on it and found that his fuel pressure is running about 100 psi. could he have a bad regulator or is something else causing this problem. any help would be appreciated.
EGADS!!! Is that with the truck running? Normal fuel pressure shoud not be more than 40-45 psi tops. At idle it should be around 30 psi. Check the pressure regulator and the vacuum line to it. I didn't know the pump was capable of 100 psi!!
Sounds like there is some sort of blockage in the return lines to the fuel tank(s). I'm not sure how you would find the blockage - it may be just as easy to run new lines, depending on where the blockage may be. I'd disconnect the return line at the tank to verify that there is no flow through the line, as opposed to there being a blockage in the sending unit in the tank. Also check for kinks in the line.
ifound it guys. he went and bought a new regulator just to see. that was it. normal pressure now, engine runs a 1000 times better. i appreciate everyones responses. thanks.
you might have been able to get away without buying a new regulator if nobody had ever taken it to ford to have the regulator recall done you could have got another one for free.
