just blew the 200k 302 and have a 96 5.8 how much trouble to swap into 91 f-250 I know it will fit what about the computer &wiring the firing order on the 5.8 is different so i will prob need 5.8 computer or rewire the injectors any help ?
The '96 should be OBD-II, which would be quite a pain to swap. The 302 computer will run the 351, but I don't know how well. The truck engines fire 4 injectors at a time, so there's no need to re-wire the injectors for the different firing order. Physically, the engine is a fairly simple swap, and I've heard that the accessories will bolt up, but I don't know for sure.
If the donor truck is EEC-IV, then take stuff from it. However I think '96 was the first year for EEC-V which is a completely different beast and would be very difficult to wire in correctly. Plus, EEC-IV is more forgiving of engine modifications.
It would probably be best to get a 351 computer or get a chip for the stock 302 computer. The differences are in the electronic controls, not the physical engine, so you should be ok with that.
The brackets for the accessories from a 302 will not bolt up to a 351W. Since the 351W is a taller block so must the brackets be taller and with it being taller you move the mounting points outward just a bit as well.
I just did the swap a couple months ago. All of the brackets will bolt up. They have multiple bolt patterns on them, and besides that, ford even used the exact same ones for both engines.
If you have a 96 engine, what I would do, is use all of the existing EFI wiring off of the 302. This will work also, because that is what I did. Dont worry about the extra 1/2" deck height, the injector harness will stretch over. You can also run the 302 computer, however, I believe you will need a 351 map sensor. To tell you the truth, when I swaped out to a 351 computer from a 302 computer, I couldn't even tell the difference. There may be a few HP, but believe me, its not noticeable for most people. Motor mounts are the same, as is the bellhousing, t-body, radiator, frame mounts, etc. You will need to get a 351 lower AND upper intake. You can NOT use a 302 upper, they don't physically mate. However, it sounds as though you may already have the intake on your engine. You will also need a 28oz balancer and 28oz flywheel/flexplate. You wil most likely be able to reuse your exhaust manifolds on the 302 (although I am willing to bet your 351 came with exhaust manifolds), but you will need to rework the exhaust due to the extra deck height of the block.
Other than that, just swap over to the 351w (302HO) firing order, and turn the key. If there is any additional little thing I forgot to mention, it will most likely swap right over.
One more word of advice, just be carefull with the injectors. Ford tended to be tricky once in a while and install low impetance injectors into certain trucks. If you plan on using the injectors off the 351 instead of your old and heat soaked 302 injectors, I wouild suggest testing them with an Ohm meter. Make sure they are all very close to each other, maybe a few 10ths off. If they are around 13-15 or so, they are high impetance, and this is what you want. Low imtetance is about 1 or 2 ohm; the engine will not even run if you use them.
