My 93 aerostar had engine overheating problem today. It had a "start" problem yesterday (actually it can start, but died immediately; after several try, it can start again and ran w/o problem). And this morning when I hit the road (locally driving), the tempgauge went to "HEAT" level, smoke coming under the hood. Could anyone give me some suggestion on what's wrong with it? Thanks!
I would guess first off that the thermostat is stuck closed. Is it a 3.0 or a 4.0? If it is a 4.0 it could also be a cracked head. I would check for the thermostat first.
I agree with scott9050, check your thermostat. Since you're not loosing any coolant, I doubt that you have a bad head, but if it keeps overheating you could warp the heads.

Is there really a big difference between the 3.0L and 4:0L regarding possible head damage? I'm suspecting head gasket leak on my 3.0L, but people keeps telling me that's probably not the case.
I also have a heating /hot condition, suspecting thermostat / heads.
Would suggest checking radiator for flow and water pump to. Had the same problem with my dads van. The radiator was pluged and water pump was shot. Runs great now for 232,000 miles, not rebiult yet. thank God. LOL. It's a good little van. Just my two cents.
