Explorer hub assembly

I have a 97 explorer 4wd with 90,000 miles. The drivers side front hub bearings are making alot of noise when cold and at 60+mph. I removed the hub assembly to find the outter bearing had very little grease on it. Also the bearing "cage" was a nylon type material. I contacted a local ford dealership to find out the bearings are not sold seperately and that the whole assembly had to be replaced at a price of $268.00. Can the bearings be pressed off and replaced? Any info would be appreciated.

I got Timken hub with new sensor, same as factory, for only $140 from local parts store. Shop around. As you noticed, the hub is one part of the bearing and they can not be rebuilt. Guess you could make one good hub out of two in some cases. These can be greased through the sensor hole. Timken has never responded to me whether the grease is polyurea based. This grease can have a bad reaction with lithium. They can create a lot of noise before you ever feel any play.

I TOOK EVERYTHING APART. THE BEARINGS WERE RUSTY AND DIRTY. I CLEANED AND GREASED THEM AND PUT IT ALL BACK TOGETHER.. IT'S BETTER, BUT NOT PERFECT. BEFORE, THE NOISE WAS CONSISTANT. NOW ITS WHEN I TURN LEFT. TIME TO SHOP FOR A NEW HUB ASSEMBLY. THANKS FOR THE RESPONSE.
