OK, Exactly 1 week ago I posted about a broken bolt while replacing my water pump. After all your help I got through everything truck was back together running fine, right. WRONG!
Today, I go out on a job( 30 mile), when I get there and shut the truck off it smells like its over heating.
I pop the hood and sure enough steam is rolling out of the holes on the water pump. I assume these holes are some sort of pressure release point. One is located on the top of the pump the other on the bottom, both spewing steam and water.
So, what gives is this another bad pump? or a sign of something else?
When it came time to leave, I filled it back up with water and it took close to 3 gallons, luckly I made it home.
I never did replace the thermostat could this be a problem or is this just another bad water pump?
Prior to today I drove the truck around 200 miles after the original repair.
I would have changed the thermostat. I would remove the thermostat, flush the cooling system, check the radiator for corosion and replace it if it looks bad or if it has never been replaced, put on another new water pump and install a new thermostat. I would also replace the stock cooling fan and fan clutch with a Perma Cool flex fan and spacer. Hope that helps.
The two holes in the front of the water pump are weep holes. Fluid leakage from these holes indicates that the water pump's shaft seal is leaking.
This is almost certainly a defective pump problem and you will have to go the trouble of replacing that pump again. When the coolant leaked out past the pump seal, you started to overheat the engine.
As suggested in the previous post, I'd replace the thermostat and do a cooling system flush. If the budget permits, I'd look at a new pump instead of a rebuilt.
the best rule of thumb is to NEVER buy a remanufactured water pump. I get new ones for about $25-30 its cheap enough to get a new one. definately have the cooling system checked and flushed and also replace the thermostat
I swear by Napa parts never got a bad part there yet and im pretty well fixing something for a friend or neighbor almost every day
id check to see nothing is blocked or anything in the cooling system too maybe a hose is deteriorating?
Ok to me it sounds like your thermostat is stuck shut thus causing your temp. to rise but i have a question for, 99 ranger bob. why not buy remanufactured??? i have found with most of my parts that the warranty on reman parts is just as good if not better than a new one, and in a case of a water pump, they replace the junk parts, seal, bearings impeller shaft, so therefore it would be as good as new right? and if not why the same warrn.???
