im at a crossroad here im trying to find out what gears i should run in my truck i have 38s now and was lookin at 4.56s but a guy i work with and wheel with tells me that i need lower than that he says more likr 4.88 or 5.13s.i think 4.56s would do fine but im still unsure also im lookin for a locker. this truck goes muddin about ever other weekend and is on the highway every day.his bronco runs a built 460 witha 4 speed and 5.13s with 39s and he makes 15mpg so if i could do somthin like that and get ok gas milage that would be nice. by the way its a 92 f150 with a300 inline six and a e40d trans witha 205 divorced
no im not going any bigger i just dont want to be im some deep mud and not have the gears to move my tires does anyone know what that will bring my ratio to with 4.88s and 38s
4.56's should work fine. We run 3.50's with 38's, but were pushing over 650 hp. I'd say go with the 4.56's. If you go muddin, you'll want the extra wheel speed of 4.56's.
There is no way he's getting 15mpg with 5.15 gears 39's and built 460 with a 4 speed. I have a stock 300 with 4.56 gears and 35" tires and a 5speed, and I get about 10mpg if i don't drive it hard. I know getting bad gas mileage hurts but you gotta remember lifting a vehicle and putting huge tires isn't helping out the effiency of the vehicle. 38's are HEAVY, you need alot of lift to clear then increasing your drag. With the 300, i'd say atleast 4.56 with those tires, 4.88 would be better as the 300 isn't a fast moving engine.
Uh...........yeah. Thats what I thought too. I've got 5.13s and 44s and I'm turning nearly 3k doing 60 which is NOT where these big blocks are the most economical. They do much better in the low 2ks. I'm thinking a 460 spinning 39s with 5.13s is gonna be a howler on the road. Be great for off-road though.
i dont know i think im going to go with 4.88s and just to let u guys know i dont have my 38s on the truck now i had them on for like a day and i would have to shift it down to 2 to keep speed going up hills damn 3.55si know its a daily driver buti think i will have a eazry time truning them down the road as well off road. but i wonder when the inline gets built up it it will be geard to low for a moded motor
Build up the inline? You'd have to put down some serious cash for it to be considered a "high rpm" engine.
However, after looking again at your specs, I see you have an OD trans. I agree, go with the 4.88s. According to the calculator I used, that will give you a good powerband off-road, and still get good highway mileage, running a happy 1900 rpm at 65 mph.
And don't forget, you still got a low range in that transfer case when it gets really hairy off-road.
does anyone know what my crawl ratio would be with them gears i have the e40d trans and i have no clue what first gear is on the trans with a divorced 205 in low lock and the 4.88 gears in the diff with 38s
