Rebuilt trannie
Help! What auto o/d trannie do I have in my '94 Explorer? Where in So. Cal. can I buy a dependable, high quality rebuild? See all kinds on the net, but don't know how reliable the vendor's are.

You have an A4LD for a 4.0 engine. They made several versions for smaller engines that are different internally. If you are going to pull it, then all the hard work is done. If you have a hard failure like OD problem, these are very easy and cheap to fix yourself. There is no such thing as a "rebuild." You are always getting back an old transmission. Anything less than a three year warranty is worthless. Be afraid, be very afraid of rebuilds. Many problems on an A4LD can be fixed in 2 hours for less than $100.

Thanks for the response. And, yes, I am very skeptical of rebuilt transmissions. Sadly, since I know little to nothing about working on them, I will seek someone who offers the warranty you suggest. Just as you say, a rebuilt is just a used transmission. Will contact some BBB's before buying. The main problem seems to be when the transmission is cold, it stalls and won't go into any gear. Once it warms up it works fine.
