Ranger milage
1. Air filter dirty or clogged
2. Emission system faults (check engine light?)
3. Fuel filter or other fuel system problems (leaks?)
4. Injectors dirty
5. Plugs
6. Tire pressure.
Just a few to start. I agree with WXboy about a tuneup. That's the first line of defense.
I have had my Ranger for 8 days
1st tank - 14 MPG mixed driving
2nd tank - 15 MPG all highway
3rd tank - 17 MPG all highway
I took it to VT last week and did some back trails and single track running up and down the mountains. Filled the tank every other day (only 2 or 3 gallons at a time). The engine is just breaking in and the third tank above was on the trip home (285 miles) and used 16.5 gallons. I believe that once I put the soft cover over the bed mileage should improve by one or two MPG. I am still really taking it easy on the gas and have not had the engine (4L SOHC V6) over 3000 RPM, but the ODO just passed 1000 miles yesterday so it is almost time to see how those 207 horses perform. I have seen some other posts regarding mileage and believe the bigger engine in 4x4 configuration does better than the 3 liter with the same transmission. 2WD 4 bangers get up to 29 MPG so your mileage really depends on engine and transmission. Also the jury is still out on tailgate up or tailgate down for better fuel economy. No matter how you look at it you are driving a truck, not really aerodynamically designed and not especially good for gas mileage. Best to keep your tires inflated and engine in good tune if you want to lessen your visits to the pump.
