Hey guys, ran into a major problem with my A/C compressor today. I noticed recently the a/c clutch was engaging and disengaging with the heat turned on. Tonight on the way home, the engine kept stalling, popped the hood to see sparks shooting from the compressor (it wasn't seized, but still turning).
The only way I get it to run is by turning the heat/ac switch to off. Is it the clutch, and is it hard to replace?
Also very strange, while the selector is in the "off" position I can turn on the fan and still get heat...I'm wondering if I have an electrical prob. somewhere.
Likely the compressor is locked up. The clutch is just trying to do its job. Since it is winter in most places, I suggest you unplug the wire on the compressor that goes to the clutch. This will allow you to use the defrost. From the tone of your post I suspect you do not have the experience to replace a compressor. I would do some serious thinking before fixing this on a 94.
Thanks for the reply, and yep I'm pretty much a novice when it comes to serious repairs...little things like belts, sensors, etc I can handle, but the rest I leave to others. I'll try disconnecting and hopefully dig up an old comp. from the boneyard and have one of my more experienced bud's help me out.
