hi, i been playing with this d#mn distributor for 2 hours i can get it to go back into place. if i rotate the distributor 180 degrees it falls into place but it wont be firing on #1. the crank is atdc . i also try to rotate the engine while moving the distributor it still wont go in. i had a cam go threw the timing cover so i replaced the cam and timing chain and gears the timing is set at 0 degrees dot to dot.
anyone have any ideas . the truck is a 1986 f250 4x4 460 engine 4 speed manual.
Your going to have to do what Mush said. Best way to explain it is to use a 12" 1/4 inch drive extension with a deep well 5/16 or 3/8 socket attached. Make sure you use duct tape to hold the socket on, otherwise you could lose it inside the engine if you catch it on the casting. Just do minute turns while trying to line them together. It took me 30 minutes to finally get mine to line up the first time doing it this way so take your time and be patient.
I had the same problem. Finally just gave up and used a black perm marker and labled the gray cap to match however it was when I could get it to drop. Label that #1 and go counter clock wise 5,4,2,6,3,7,8. The only thing that matters is that you start from TDC and keep them in order.
i think i got it in. waiting on a timing cover for it going to take another week for it to come in there back order . the rotor is on #1 and the timing chain is lined up right. so now is the wait for the timing cover
