cutting out and more

'86 F-150 EFI 302

Here's the background:

Last year August I had the engine overhauled. The high pressure fuel pump ran quiet before the overhaul. After the overhual the pump ran LOUD. I installed a new fuel pressure regulator. No change. Had new high pressure pump installed. New pump was just as loud as the old one. I tolerated the noise for a year. Three days ago I picked up a new pump and had it installed. Just as loud as the ones before. Today I had a fourth high pressure fuel pump installed and it's just as loud. I even tried different brands of pumps.

New fuel filters were installed with each pump.

The truck ran great, even with the first and second loud pumps. Since the change of pump three days ago the truck is cutting out above 2000 rpms while driving. Still does it with the fourth pump and filter.

I can't figure this out. Why can't I get a high pressure pump to run quiet as it was before the overhaul and why is it cutting out on me now? The mechanics aren't being much help.

I'm broke, mad, and the weather is turning horribly cold for who knows how long. I'm at my wits end with this. Any help is appreciated.

sounds like a mess dude i would have ignored the noise before but i am not sure why it cuts out when you replaced the things that i would have. Good luck!

Pull fuel? The mechanic I took the truck to said that the high pressure pump is only to build up pressure for the injectors. The low pressure pumps in the tanks supply the fuel to the high pressure. Now I'm a bit confused.

I'm getting fed up with the mechanic, he doesn't seem to care too much if the problem gets fixed or not. Looks like I'm on my own again.

Where should I start when trouble shooting this problem? Hopefully the weather will be getting nice enough to start looking over the truck. I'll check fuel lines. What else? Spark plugs? Anyone have any ideas why it would be cutting out over 2000 rpms?

maybe the pump in the tank isn't working? This is forcing the high pressure pump to pick up the slack, and pull fuel from the tank. The extra strain on the pump might be what is making them all loud, because their all working extra hard. And then maybe the pump may not be able to provide adequate pressure when the motor requires it.

Just a thought. Good luck

This might not be happening to you. I own an '85 F150 302EFI and it started giving me trouble running. Had no power at first, fouled out plugs, wouldn't idle without giving the engine 3/4 throttle. I took it to an IDIOT of a mechanic and suggested him checking the timing chain. He asured me that the problem had to be something else. We tried everything from pressure regulator, computers, fuel pumps (internal/external) nothing helped. After that IDIOT left the garage a buddy of mine started messing with it and the timing chain upper gear, which is plastic from Ford, was worn out. Replaced gears and timing chain and the trucks runs like a brand new one. I don't know if this is your problem but would not hurt to check.

Map Sensor could be causing your truck to run like crap. And it sounds as if the fuel line return back to the tank(s) are plugged/or pinched off. Check the fuel pressure, if it is too high, you have found your problem for the loud fuel pump.

I like this idea. If the regulator or the fuel return was clogged causing too high pressure, the truck would not run very good. When a pump sucks air, it's called "cavitation". A pump that cavitates will be very noisy.

How do I check the in-tank pumps to see if they are running properly? I've got dual tanks. High pressure pump is loud on both.

I hope to get to it tomorrow after work. Should be warm enough to get a start on it.

Went out and checked it over today. When you hit the accelerator (from idle) it wants to stall, then pops. Slow accelerating is fine (this is parked, not while driving).

Sure does sound like it doesn't have enough fuel. It would be nice to see what the fuel pressure is. I have heard though, that some of these trucks don't have a test port on the fuel rail for the guage hook-up.

It does have a port on it. I'm taking down to a shop tomorrow and having a pressure test done and to see what else they can dig up on it.

What should the pressure be if all is operating as it should?

if it was me id throw away the fuel injection and all the computer crap and go back to a 4bbl edelbrock and do away with all the electronic junk, too many sensors and little things to go wrong and when they do not even the mechanics can figure it out. so i just stick with the older trucks, mechalical every thing no electronics!! way easier
