Red this site, it should answer most all of your questions.

Basically, Spyware are programs that make a nest in your computer and broadcast information.

Some are relatively harmless (for instance, they'll record when you visit a certain website and send the usage statistics back to the administrator) while some will help itself to credit card numbers, etc.

Either way, it's a huge invasion of privacy.

Go here:
http://www.lavasoft.de/support/download/

and pick one of the sites to download this program from. It's called "Ad-Aware" and it's by Lavasoft. It's free, and it will dig all those spyware programs out of your computer.

You'll be amazed at how fast your computer runs after the spyware is given the boot.

I second the Ad-aware! You should also get a program called Spybot. It functions identically like Ad-aware, but can catch things that Ad cant, and vice versa. It can be found at http://download.com.com/3000-2144-10...ml?tag=lst-0-3 .

Adware is in itself- spyware. The Spybot is the ticket. Spybot is also free. If you have the ever persistant popups, try googles toolbar- it catchs about 99% of them. If you frequent Ebay, it loads spyware to your computer and don't download their toolbar as it is a spyware generator. Can't wait for the new Cd-ROM environments to get here. It will eliminate all the BS.

AdAware , Spybot IMHO. If you use adaware make sure you do the backup so you can restore things just in case you mess up. Both are very effective I've found, and for maximum results I'd suggest running both. BTW, clear your temporary internet files and cookies before running adaware; cookies are regarded as spyware. Look for EVIL things like Webhancer and Gator; these people suck!

I use the ad-aware, seems to work very well. I haven't tried any of the others, so I can't comment, but the ad-aware is a good program.

Go to www.wilderssecurity.com and check out Spyware Blaster and Spyware Guard. They are free and work very well to protect you from a LOT of nasties that will load onto your machine without you knowing it. Also on that site it explains spyware a bit so you might have a better understanding of it all.

I run Adaware and update it weekly. I run SpywareBlaster and Spyware Guard and check for updates regularly. I don't think you can hardly do enough to protect you and your computer from the various and sundry crooks that WILL find a way to get what ever they want.

I have found the free downloads that I posted about to be very effective and reliable. The developer does ask for donations, but it is not a requirement.

All software or downloads of this nature should have free upgrades. Purchased software usually gives you a years use then an option to renew and pay again. The programs mentioned above are free...at least for now.

Just make sure that you check for updates on whatever program you use and on a regular basis. Spyware people, just like email spammers, are on a constant mission of changing their codes in an attempt to get past any kind of software you use to block them. In my Spyware Guard, for example, there are probably between 500 and 1000 programs that it watches for, removes, etc. ( Thats just a guess..the list is unbelievably long.) I just updated it yesterday and there were about 50 more programs it blocks. I also ran my Adaware for update and then a scan and it found more spyware that the other programs didn't.
