I am getting ready to buy a new 2003 250 SuperDuty 4x4, SC, Sport Package. I will be using it as a daily driver mostly. However, there will be occasional towing on the HWY. My boat weighs appx 5000 lbs. I was originally looking at the 5.4 V8. Now I am considering the V10. Can somone give me an estimate on gas milage for the two?
I Average 20+ mpg on the highway (60-70mph) and 18mpg mixed driving...Oops, oh yeah that's with my PSD!! I got a max of 17mpg on the highway with my '00 Expy 5.4 and only 12-13mpg mixed driving.
Oh yeah and 11-13mpg towing my 5000lbs trailer with the PSD and only 7-8mpg with the 5.4 expy. I have to add that the PSD tows the trailer a whole lot better too. The expy 5.4 would downshift from 4th to 2nd on all the overpasses...OD was out of the question! The PSD jumps into OD and stays there unless I hit some serious elevation change. The more I drive the PSD the more I'm glad that I decided to go with the diesel.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 01-Oct-02 AT 11:41 PM (EST)]The best I did in mixed driving was 14.1 mpg.
I haven't had the chance to check the hwy. mileage but I suspect it will over 16 at normal speeds,65-70mph.
With the mods I have,I now get 13 in mixed driving and I do not drive conservatively, meaning I play with the power.IMO,unloaded you might lose between 1 and 1.5mpg.Towing I doubt if you will lose any mpg.and may get even better than the 5.4.
I forgot to mention that on a recent trip from SW Ohio through Pa. and back with my mods on this 02 SD listed below, towing roughly 6500lbs at 70mph.regardless of terrain,I was getting 10 and 11mpg.
Did you make a purchase? I am looking for the same info and have about the same towing needs as you. I am really curious of the MPG that the 5.4 gets both in town and highway.
