I have some extra fog lights laying around (too cheap to be decent fog lights). Since i want to use them but they arent bright enough for fog lights i was wondering how to use them as back-up lights. do rangers even have trailer harnesses. I dont have a towing pakage just a bumper hitch. I want to wire them in to the back-up lights. Any suggestions?
So there is an outlet back there? I saw something on the clipped onto the spare tire carrier, but i wasn't sure what it was. It had a cover over the end but it didnt want tocome off and i didnt want to break it. Is this the outlet you connected the harness to?
yes, I just went out and checked to be sure. mine is by the spare tire and has a "cap" over the plug. I just pulled the cap off and plugged it in. the plug in harness I bought has a female and male side to it so you could in theory buy two, plug them both in and still have a trailer harness.
I just want to make thefoog lights work but there should be a line ther for the trailer backup lights. I guess ill try to wire into that outlet. Thanx.
I just put some reverse lights on my truck. I wanted to be able to turn them on with out the truck in reverse so I connected the lights to an unused terminal in my fuse box. Then connected the wire to a toggle switch inside the cab. Works great and looks factory. Doing it this way is a little more work but now I can turn them on say when I'm hook'n up a trailer with the truck in reverse.
yeah i thought about doing that too. Maybe i will. I just have them off my old car and want to get a little use out of them. Where did u mount the switch?
Hate to be a stick in the mud but you better check with your local motor vehicle laws first. Where I live it is illegal to have a seperate switch to turn on back up lights (to many people turning them on when going down the highway and blinding the car behind them?). I know the police have stopped a lot of plow guys that have them and checked to see if they go on when in reverse only or have a seperate switch.
At work we will only wire them up to go on with the factory reverse wire. Many of the plow guys wire a seperate lead to the lights with a 12v source through a switch. This turns on the aftermarket lights as well as the factory reverse lights when on, but works the aftermarkets like it was only hooked up to the reverse lights when off.
