I posted this problem before, but have since tried several things and still have the problem. My Bronco has a shake over 60mph that feels exactly like un-balanced rear tires. It has the stock rims and 265x15 Goodyear Wrangler tires which I just replaced on the recommendation of the tire shop. I have put the back tires and rims on the front and it didn't change anything. I talked to the previous owner and he said it always did it to some degee at certain speeds. Does anyone have any ideas?
Like they said:
Driveshaft damaged or unbalanced
Bad pinion bearing/crush sleeve or pinion nut is loose
Bad U-joint or double cardan joint
Bad wheel bearing/axle shaft
Reminds me of a problem i had with my f-150, i took it to Ford to see what they could figure out (in late 80s)Mistakenly i had left the hubs locked what little i did( checking iit out myself) and walla they reply, your hubs are locked in . i asked if they checked out the u joints they replied yes we did, no charge. When i got a day off after (working 7- 12 hr days ), i undid the drive shaft and oops i saw dust coming from the u joint( bad).Mine had a shake in it round 45-50 . If your u joints are good.and all previous things stated in here checked out (bearings ,pinion etc_ -take it to a driveline specialist. good luck let us know what it was.TR
I agree with everyone else about the drive train but i am willing to bet it is your rear u joint ..you can check it to see if it is loose but even if its not it could be going. the inside of the u joint wears out and beggins to rotate out of balance instead of a perfect circle u joints are cheap usualy preaty easy and if you want to do it with a press auto zone rents them really cheap. Ohh and for you ford owners if you havent discovered it already us PB ( phabulos blaster ) sold in auto zone it will free any bolt you come accross if it doesnt work right away spray it 3 times in a day by the next day youl be golden
4 time owner of broncos cant get enough of em iv had every problem so far
Mine does the same thing, vibrates in the steering wheel around 55 mph. Its the front tires middle tread. The tread is wavey, one lug higher than the next lug.
Ahhhh yes...I forgot about that. thats called "Cupping" Happens if you dont rotate your tires enough. Happens even more for those of us running the all terrains and mudders. Damn...I missed that one all together. But if ya rotate them now, the vibration will be a bit worse til the tires wear evenly again.
56.7? damn! And all this time I thought it was 57.
4xBronco has a good point. Where to start. Could be a ton of things...just have to start checking and fixing. Who knows. You could wind up fixing something that is almost broke and save yourself a headache later.
I had a vibration thru the truck starting at @80Kph, (@45mph) after 1) checking wheel balance, 2) replacing all uni joints, some felt ok but were completely stuffed, 3) new tires, i took the drive shaft to a balancing outfit and found it was bent, also it was 'out of phase' (it wasnt put back together again exactly as it came apart , important to mark all parts of drive shaft and re assemble exactly as it was., now fixed....
I finally found out what it was. I took it to a Goodyear tire shop and had their best tech. balance my tires. We found two out -of round -rims. Now I know why I don't see too many Broncos with stock rims. Actually, all the wheels wobbled but 3 plus the spare
are useable.
