Goodyear Load Range E tires
Apparently Goodyear's known about this problem for as long as Firestone knew about theirs BUT they have been able to get away with not doing a mass recall because these tires are on so many different vehicles, not on an identifiable vehicle such as the Explorer.
They've tried their standard line of bull saying tires are underinflated, speed was a factor, tires not maintained etc...but their own internal documents show this can not be proven. Somehow they were granted a gag order for a bunch of lawyers who wanted to go public. This really chesses me off.
The show said there was probably about 2 million tires out there that still could have a problem and that the manufacturing process wasn't changed until mid 2000. They added a nylon "cap" to reduce tread separation.
I know a lot of guys are running these tires on their Superduties, passenger vans, ambulances etc because of the load rating.
It was recommended that if you have any model of Goodyear LRE tires you inspect the sidewall where the tread starts to see if any cracking is visible. Also check the sidewall information to see if nylon cords are not listed as part of the tire construction. This may mean you could have a problem tire. Goodyear calls them "actors".
I'm throwing this out to spread the word. Maybe a life can be saved.
