Timing marks

Oh, I forgot in my other thread - I have two crankshaft dampers with different markings. The one I took of a 1963 292 has the markings as shown in the shop manual - faint but readable. The damper that came with Earl has only one, very deep, line. The engine seems to run best when we use the single line as TDC, but we're wondering if anyone knows if the single mark style damper is marked at TDC or 10 degrees BTDC - the normal timing for these engines. Seems sort of strange that the single mark would be at TDC since there are no other marks and you'd have a heck of a time figuring out where 10 degrees BTDC was without another damper to refer to. Any info most appreciated.

Happy New Year, George. Nice to have you posting... but such a troublesome post. It confounds me. Perhaps because I haven't taken a y-block down and back up again... perhaps because I don't know what I'm talking about.
I checked my shop manual and found the single pointer and timing mark on the damper. I assume this is the one you mentioned. This is not how I come to getting my 8 degrees BTDC on my 292. Is there a difference? The arrow points to the toothed guage that marks degrees down from 0. With my timing light and a twist of the wrist I can dial in the required setting. Are we talking about the same thing here or am I in for a lesson? Glad you are back. Peter

Hi Peter,

From your photo, our pointers and rings are pretty similar, and yet just a little different. Here is a closeup of my setup.

The big line we've already marked in yellow seems to match #1 cylinder TDC, but with the equipment we have it's really hard to tell within less than 5 to 10 degrees.

I think this picture might actually answer my questions. Greg, Evan, and I all looked these parts over quite thoroughly last week and none of us could make out any marks on that ring except the big one we painted yellow. I went out in the garage about 30 minutes ago and took about 12 closeup pictures. This one must have had the flash lighting just right and I think I can see the remains of some original timing marks. Can anyone else see the very faint (imaginary?) timing marks I've highlighted with the white lines? It also looks like there just might be some numbers to the left of those marks, as I've noted in the pic.

If anybody else thinks those are real timing marks and not just scratches - then I'm all set. Those marks are where the shop manual says they should be, and with some confirmation from you guys that I'm not imagining them, I'll just paint a second yellow line across the balancer where the 10 degree BTDC mark should be. I'll be sure to put a nice, neat "10" next to the new line and a "TDC" next to the line we already have.

Let me know if you can see the marks or if you think I'm imagining them. I know it's a little silly to ask, but the eye doc says my cataracts are getting worse and my eyesight has been declining a lot lately.
