clunking?

Have 83 F350 When in 4 wheel drive it makes a clunking noise not clunk clunk clunk but drive a little ways and clunk drive a little ways and clunk etc..... It has been doing this since I bought the truck. The fwd quit working for a while so I put new manual front hubs on it fwd works now but the noise is still there. Almost positive it is coming from the front end. Now I have another question a friend of mine said there was a chain in the transfer case is this true. If so is there a way to tighting it.

Make sure all your tires are the same size,if they are not you are getting a condition called wind up. One rear end is gaining rpms faster than the other one,and it will only do it in 4 wheel drive. Mush

Since it only does it in 4 wheel,If your tires are the same size and the same amount of wear on them all, then check and see if one of the front axle joints are hanging up.Since its only in 4 wheel the problem would almost have to be in the front axle. Mush

Yeah I'm thinking on just replacing the axle joints. I need to get it taking care of because I bought the truck to snow plow and haul wood and snows long over due in northern Michigan.
