Go to this thread, read completely…. and post.

ODOMETER reading at time of problem is critical.
In addition, please read more instructions, bottom of first page, posted by Tim L
Tell as many as you can about this thread.
The simpler the writing (posting) of “problem/odometer” reading………….the easier it will be to collate. Do not need many words. I must reduce all the date into a usable format; extra words will take more time to complete.

Thanks

I had a very rough idle after cranking the engine, after it had cooled down. It would shake the whole truck and smoke. I had to throttle up on it a little to get it to smooth out and then wait for a minute or so for the engine to warm up. I went and had the truck reflashed last week, and now everything seems to be much better.

I've got an '03 F-250 SuperCab 4x4, with the 6.0 Powerstroke, and the Torque Shift Transmission, purchased in May of '03. I had a very rough idle after cranking the engine, after it had cooled down. It would shake the whole truck and smoke. I had to throttle up on it a little to get it to smooth out and then wait for a minute or so for the engine to warm up. I went and had the truck reflashed last week, and now everything seems to just fine. It actually runs a little better than it did when it was new.

Thank god for other "new users" or I wouldnt have anyone to talk to here. Yea my truck did that periodically and so far after the reflash has not repeated it. How often did yours do this? And do you experience a fast idle response on start up after reflash? As for noise with mine its a little louder. And power, well I just put 35 inch tires and a 4" lift on so it's kind of hard to tell. I believe the top end has a little more ump to it. Thanks

It started off just doing it when the engine had been sitting for a day or so. Then as the temperature started dropping, it got worse. Recently, it was doing it after it cooled down for 2-3 hrs. I'd go through the same thing everytime I cranked it up. If I plugged in the engine block heater, it would start up perfect, until I cut off the motor and let it cool off for a while, then it was the same old story. The reflash has made it a little louder, and it sounds different when it starts, but I haven't had the idle problem yet. I haven't checked the fuel mileage, but it appears to be about the same.

Do not know where you live but I am in south texas and lucky if it gets below 50 degrees. I am new to this whole thing and still wonder if the cold weather really exacerbates this whole 6.0 thing. Thanks

Powertrain Control Module Reflash

I had my 2004 SD reflashed, yesterday. The only thing that I have noticed that is different is the start up when dead cold. The engine sounds like it runs-on for a moment...as if I were throttling up on start up. I don't really like the sound the engine makes when this happens. When the engine is warm/hot, the start up sounds normal.

The oct flash helped me with the start up issue. But in return my fuel MPG went down 3-5.

I live in North Alabama, about 10 miles south of Huntsville. It got down to 13 here last night, so it can get kinda cold here. It's fairly normal to have temps in the 20's here at night. I purposely didn't plug up the heater the night after I had the reflash done, just to see how it would do the next morning. It done just fine, of course I have plugged the heater back up now that I know it's fixed.

I have an 03 Excursion 6.0L PSD (March 03 Build)

Just had 15,000 mile service down at 12,300.

Had updated flash (old one was October)... but I am not sure if I got December or January (which somebody said came out)???

Dealer said that their WDS machine is connected at all times via the net for immediate and/or nightly updates from FMC. The service writer and tech did not know which was updated, but whatever one is was done since they update daily from FMC.

Now for the good news....

December (or maybe January)? update has shown the following improvements (or changes) over the October flash.

1) Highway mileage shows 19.0 on overhead computer.

2) Actual mileage vs fuel computed at 20.7 MPG.

(Using #2 winterized with Power Service winter additive for freeze protection and cetane level).

(Outside temp was 32 F to 39F) during driving).

3) Tip-in and Tip-out is firmer with NO lag.

4) Shift points were raised slightly.

5) Idle remained the same, but does slightly run up to 1,000 for cold starts, but drops back down to 600 - 700 RPM's.

6) Idle will raise if temperature drops of idles for a long time. Touch the brake or gas peddal, and RPM's drop back down.

7) A little bit of turbo "wine" is now heard, but not bad - sounds like a 7.3.

All in all, I am very happy with the latest flash (Dec or Jan??). The pro's out-do the cons.

I recommend the latest FLASH!!!!

Good luck to all... Keep Strok'n (I know but I couldn't resist).

Thanks,
