Well i still cant get my 77 351m running right, i installed a new carb and it still didnt run, installed a new fuel filter and bam! it runs!! But it wond stay running at first unless i give it gas. so i adjusted on it some not knowing at all what im doing now it willnot run unless i give it gass all the time I dont know if i can fix it myself, maybe it just needs a carb adjustment, what do you think?
What carb did you use? I think a rule of thumb would be to turn both screws in till they just seat. (do not over tighten!!!) then back out 1 1/2 turns or so. from there you can play with it. If it's a motocraft carb, get a manual to help (chilton or haynes). Anyone else? I'm just a backyard grease monkey but she runs.
Try setting the idle mixture screws to 3 full turns out. If they are in too far, it causes lean misfire at idle. The exhaust will smell rich because the misfire dumps unburned fuel into the exhaust. Remember, those screws adjust the mixture only at idle (i.e., throttle closed).
Check the choke pull-down system. With the choke plate closed completely by the choke thermostat, the pull-down should open the choke slightly when vacuum is applied to the pull-down diaphragm. The diaphragm should not leak vacuum.
You can adjust the pull-down opening with a screw on the back of the pull-down diaphragm canister. Measure the opening between the front edge of the choke plate and the inside of the choke tower. The pull-down opening should be about 1/8" with vacuum applied.
