I know this question has probably been asked a million times before but I am new and the site search is not working for me.
I have a chance to get a 76 f-250 CHEAP! Will any of the power steering or disk brake parts fit on my 68 F-100. I know the rotors won't work but what about the steering shaft, gearbox, etc.?
i just finished putting power steering and power disc brakes from a 78 f150 in my 68 f100 new rotors can be had for around 25 each and calipers for 10.each
i just swaped the whole front end i beams trailing arms and spindles i found them in a junk yard for $70 and got 2 power steering boxes 1 pump the beams and spindles and drag link and tie rod assembly and a air conditioner unit far so good
also modified the rotors and rear axles for a set of 20 inch dodge wheelsnow we are tring to get a 88 302 fi motor and od trans set in her ope by this weekend
Thanks, I measured the bolt pattern on the gear box and it looks the same. From reading past info on this site I think my main concerns will be the longer box/shorter column shaft, and the drivers side motor mount. I bought the truck and if the stuff doesn't work I will just have another project.
There is a company called BORGESON,860-482-8283, that sells replacement steering shafts, this is a good time to upgrade a worn shaft. They are very helpful, and can build a custom shaft to fit your needs, I have converted many late 70's model 4x4's over to an AGR steering box with that steering shaft for the new connection, you would be surprised how much steering wander can be attributed to the wear in those joints.
yes, the power steering box will fit in your f100. I had a '76 f350 to use 4 parts and the bolt holes in the frame were exactly the same.
although, when i got it all done and put on the steering wheel it rested almost into my chest w/the seat all the way back.
to solve this i used the same column tube from my '70 but i had 2 cut 5inches off the column to bring it back to normal length. dont forget to weld the bearing cup back onto the bottom of the steering tube. I also used the steering shaft from the '76 to get the correct measurment for the length of the tube, then put it all together. it works for me!
DESIGN IT ON PAPER FIRST WITH MEASURMENTS, TEST DONT GUESS, and u shouldnt have any problems. ask if u do!
Haven't got to the steering column yet, still trying to get the gear box to fit with the motor mount. I need about 1/4 inch more clearance even after grinding out a big chunk of the mount. I am going to see if the mount from the 76 f-250 will fit this weekend. Still trying to figure out what engine is in the 76.
I ran into that motor mount problem with my 66 Ranger when I changed to a 70's style power steering gearbox... I got the left engine support off the parts truck and it mounts to another set of holes in the frame. After I changed the support bracket, everything fit. No holes to drill, they are already there. Your engine is probably a 360-390 if it is a V-8. Check that left bracket, I'll bet its different than the one in your truck.
Yep, 360 in the 68' don't know what is in the 76 parts truck. The vin# says 400 ci, the guy at NAPA says no such thing listed for a 76 f-250. The mount looks pretty close except it angles away from the firewall more than the stock mount. I will give it a shot today.
