Vehicle is a '97 Aerostar XLT extended. The rear fan works on all settings (ie low-high, vent-defrost) but will not blow hot air. The front fan blows hot air and works on all settings. Help, it is getting cold outside.

Check the tempature flap.1 Just remove the rear heater panel. 2 Remove the heater box cover. It has about 10 x10mm bolts. 3 once you have that off, you can check to see if it working. By moving the front heater control to vent to heat, etc, etc. It should move.
If not check the vac lines. I had one of them fall off before. They are located just behind the heater box (red/org/wht). If they are ok check if the vac motor is good. They last for ever, but can go bad.
The heating system the Aero is easy to fix. if you can oickup a Cliton or Motors manuel. They are the cats ***, to fix minor faults and to find where everything is.
Good Luck, Happy NEW YEAR.

More likely, the vacuum operated heater control valve is not functioning properly. This is found under the van, near the heater/AC unit. It is a circular looking affair with a single vacuum line attached to it. Remove the valve, open it and clean it thoroughly. It often gets "gunked" up and does not open to allow water circulation through the rear heater core. You can test this by allowing the engine to reach operating temperature, turning the rear heater unit on and feeling the heater lines near the rear valve. If the incoming line is hot on one side of the valve but cool to cold on the other, then the valve is not working. If the line is hot on both sides of the valve but the return line is cool/cold then the problem is within the heater core - likely a blockage.
