You can use an old bronco front axle or a jeep cherokee axle. I used a bronco axle on my old Ranger. I used all the Bronco suspension it was relitively easy. The hardest part was getting the rivets out of the Ranger brackets. I now have a BroncoII, that I am planning on putting full sized axles under. But thats another story.
Were there any issues with width or any modifications to the transfer case or driveshaft? I have never done anything like this and have no clue... Which axle from a jeep or old bronco should I use? Thanks for the info...
This is in regards to a 1988 Bronco II 4X4 with FM 146 tranny and 2.9l engine...
I believe I used a front axle out of a 75 Bronco when I did my Ranger. That was about 10 years ago (OLDTIMERS desease) so its hard to remember it all. But is was a fairly straight forward swap. I used my original drive shaft. The easiest way would be to get an old style Bronco for a donor vehicle that way you would have all the brackets and hardware. Or you can go all out and fabricate your own suspension.
Sure... let me just run down to my vault and shift through the millions I have. LOL

I hear your pain russ.
Why do you want to go SAS? Is it more strength? You might want to go D35/8.8 from an explorer.
You want to stay away from the dana 30 solid axle it is weaker than the dana 35 TTB, from what I am told.
I was wanting to go to a straight axle because of the bigger tires/more strength issue. Also, part of me wanted to be the first to do something like that around here to a B2. I see plenty of lifted/customized 4x4s but they are all big broncos, jeeps, rice burners, etc. However I have decided that I really can't justify sinking $3-$4000 dollars in something like that.
The Dana 35 is sounding better all the time. I have hit just about every salvage yard within 50 miles and no one has what I need for the SAS. I have begun asking about the Dana 35 with no success. Guess nobody around here junks those Explorers. I can find plenty of leaf springs etc, but no front or rear axles...
I'll keep looking, though.
Do you know if the 35 will go in pretty easily?
thanks for your help...

Yes it will. Its almost a bolt on operation. The whole axle will bolt right in. You are going to have to modify the front driveshaft by shortening it- I think an inch or inch and a half.
